Description
Ponzu is a young woman with pale green hair, large dark eyes, and a distinctive round hat, which is also the home of the many bees she keeps and commands. She first appears as an applicant during the Hunter Examination and later returns as an amateur hunter during the Chimera Ant conflict.

During the 287th Hunter Exam, Ponzu was examinee number 246. She cleared the first three phases of the exam and was one of the few female applicants to reach the later stages, advancing among the twenty-four examinees to the fourth phase. In that phase, where each applicant had to steal the badge of a designated target, she was assigned an applicant named Bourbon. She fell into one of his traps and became trapped in a cave, and when the trap threatened her, her bees attacked Bourbon and accidentally killed him. She was rescued by Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika, but while she was unconscious, Gon took her badge, and she was eliminated from the exam. She attempted the exam again the following year as examinee number 233, but her badge was taken by Killua, and she failed a second time. Afterward, she worked as an amateur hunter and later joined an investigation into Chimera Ants in the country of NGL, where she was killed by a soldier ant while trying to reach the border after her group was attacked.

In terms of personality, Ponzu is intelligent, patient, composed, and cautious. She plans ahead, prepares carefully, and avoids unnecessary risks, and she is not suited to direct physical combat, preferring traps, chemicals, and indirect methods over open fighting. She remains calm under pressure, as shown when she coolly announced her withdrawal from the exam after the cave incident, and she approaches her work in a serious and collected manner.

Her main motivation is to become a Hunter, which is why she takes the exam more than once and continues doing hunter-related work even after failing. During the Chimera Ant investigation, she shows commitment to her mission: when her team is wiped out and her companion Pokkle is captured, she writes emergency messages in her own blood and sends them with her bees to the strongest hunter she can locate, hoping to bring help before fleeing for the border.

Her most significant relationship is with Pokkle, a fellow examinee whom she later works alongside as an amateur hunter. Their bond is shown more strongly in the anime, where they appear as close partners during the NGL investigation, and her final act is tied to trying to save him. She also interacts with Gon and his companions during the exam, and although Gon's taking of her badge ends her first attempt, there is no lasting hostility between them. The message she sends out is eventually received by Kite, connecting her fate to the main characters' efforts in the Chimera Ant arc.

Over the course of her appearances, she develops from an exam applicant into a capable support-oriented hunter who has some awareness of Nen. Her sudden death near the end of the Chimera Ant arc is a stark illustration of the danger posed by the ants and the harshness of the hunter world.

Her defining ability is her control over bees, which she keeps inside her hat in large numbers. The bees attack anyone who threatens her, either automatically or on her command, and she can also use them to scout, track individuals, and deliver messages across long distances. In addition to her bees, she uses chemical-based tactics, such as numbing wasps, to set traps. She is confirmed to be a Manipulation-type Nen user whose ability centers on commanding bees, and she uses this skill primarily for defense, reconnaissance, and communication rather than direct combat.
