Description
Machi Komacine is the Phantom Troupe member designated as number 3 and one of the group’s founding members. She was born and raised in Meteor City, a lawless dumping ground where the children who would become the Troupe first banded together. That environment forged in her a fierce, unconditional loyalty to the spider, its leader Chrollo Lucilfer, and her fellow original members. She learned Nen from an embalmer named Renko, making her one of the earliest Troupe members to acquire the ability, and she was present during the massacre of the Kurta Clan, an event that would later draw the revenge of Kurapika.
In terms of personality, Machi presents an outward demeanor of cool detachment and minimal emotional expression. She rarely raises her voice or shows visible distress, even when seriously injured. Yet beneath that calm surface, she possesses a strong will and a surprisingly caring nature toward her comrades. Fellow member Shalnark describes her as soft behind her uncaring facade. She mourned for Pakunoda at her grave and showed genuine sadness over the loss of Uvogin. Despite her composure, she can become dangerously hot-tempered and foul-mouthed when truly provoked, especially if Chrollo’s safety is at stake. She is guided more by instinct than by logic, and her intuition is remarkably sharp; both Chrollo and Nobunaga place great trust in her hunches, which have often proven correct.
Machi’s motivations are rooted in the survival and integrity of the Troupe above all else. She adheres to the principle that the spider must continue even if the head falls, yet when Chrollo was captured by Kurapika, she was among those willing to break that rule to save him. Later, after the Troupe’s battle with Hisoka, she vowed to kill Hisoka herself for murdering Kortopi and Shalnark, making revenge a driving force in the later arcs.
Her role in the story is tightly woven into the Troupe’s operations. She was the first Troupe member to appear in the narrative, encountered while stitching up Hisoka’s severed arms after his fight with Kastro in Heaven’s Arena. Throughout the Yorknew City arc, she acts as a tracker, healer, and restrained voice of reason within the group. In the Succession Contest arc aboard the Black Whale, she becomes a key player in the Troupe’s hunt for Hisoka, carrying his message of war to the others.
Key relationships define much of her arc. Her bond with Chrollo is one of absolute devotion; she trusts his judgment implicitly and has challenged other members on his behalf. Her connection with Hisoka is particularly complex. He shows a persistent romantic and combative interest in her, which she meets with cold dismissal and distrust. Despite this, she agrees to sew his arms back together, and after his death at Chrollo’s hands she is briefly stunned by the post-mortem Nen he left behind. His reappearance and the murders of their comrades transform any remaining ambiguity into pure antagonism, and she now actively wishes to kill him. She also shares a quiet, respectful solidarity with Pakunoda and a pragmatic, occasionally contentious dynamic with Nobunaga.
Regarding character development, Machi has gradually revealed more emotional depth over the course of the series. Early on she appears almost robotic in her efficiency, but as Troupe members die and the threat from Hisoka escalates, she shows raw anger, grief, and a clear sense of personal vendetta. Her growing frustration with Chrollo’s handling of the Hisoka situation suggests an internal tension between her loyalty and her own instincts.
Machi’s notable abilities center on her Transmutation-type Nen skill, known as Nen Threads or Nen Stitches. She transmutes her aura into thin, incredibly strong threads whose tensile strength varies inversely with length. Within a distance of about one meter, a single thread can support over one metric ton. At longer lengths the threads become more fragile, but she can still extend them to theoretically circumnavigate the globe if she sacrifices strength. She uses these threads for multiple purposes: binding and strangling opponents, setting up surveillance tripwires, tracking targets by attaching Nen-infused needles, and performing surgical repairs on physical injuries. Her most celebrated medical feat is the instantaneous reattachment of Hisoka’s completely severed arms, reconnecting blood vessels, nerves, and muscle tissue with perfect precision. She can also use Gyo with her threads to enhance their cutting or piercing properties. Physically, Machi is formidable even by Troupe standards; she ranks sixth in arm wrestling among the members and once used only her abdominal muscles to stop Killua’s hand, trapping him in place. Her reflexes are exceptional, and her pain tolerance is extremely high. Together, her combat skills, healing capability, tracking expertise, and uncanny intuition make her one of the Phantom Troupe’s most versatile and strategically vital assets.
