Description
Illumi Zoldyck, also known under the alias Gittarackur, is the eldest son of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, making him the heir to the infamous Zoldyck family of assassins. In terms of physical presence, he is a tall individual standing at 185 centimeters with a slender build weighing 68 kilograms, characterized by his extraordinarily long black hair and large, dark, seemingly vacant eyes. During the 287th Hunter Examination, he concealed his true appearance under the identity of Gittarackur, a persona created by inserting special needles into his face and body to completely restructure his features.

As a personality, Illumi is defined by his chilling lack of visible emotion. He almost never displays expressions, speaking instead in a tone that can be described as both detached and, at times, eerily cheerful or absent-minded. Beneath this calm surface lies a stony and ruthless individual whose thinking is overwhelmingly cold and self-serving. His entire identity and worldview are built upon his upbringing as a professional killer. He is a firm believer in the assassin’s creed, viewing it not just as a job but as the sole purpose for those born into his family. This belief system is most potently directed at his younger brother, Killua, towards whom Illumi harbors a profoundly distorted and possessive form of love.

Illumi’s primary motivation throughout the narrative is the control and protection of Killua, whom he sees as the family’s most promising heir. To ensure Killua’s survival and prevent him from forming dangerous attachments or facing unwinnable fights, Illumi implanted a special Nen needle directly into Killua’s brain. This needle subconsciously forced Killua to flee from any opponent he perceived as potentially stronger than himself, a manipulation that Illumi genuinely rationalizes as a protective act. Furthermore, his interest extends to the unique and world-altering power of his sibling Alluka. Unlike the rest of the family who fear Alluka, Illumi is fixated on harnessing this power for his own gain, demonstrating a willingness to eliminate any threat to his plans, including family members he does not consider part of the inner circle.

In the story, Illumi plays the role of an antagonistic force, often lurking behind the scenes to exert control over his family. He first gained his Hunter license during the same exam as Gon and Killua, a necessity for certain assassination contracts. He effortlessly passed the physical trials while disguised as Gittarackur, ultimately confronting a shocked Killua in the final round and manipulating him into forfeiting the match. His skills are frequently sought by others; for instance, in the Yorknew City arc, he was hired by Chrollo Lucilfer to assassinate the Mafia Ten Dons. He also maintains a complex and unconventional relationship with the magician Hisoka Morow. While Hisoka refers to Illumi as a friend, their dynamic is volatile, built on a mutual understanding of each other's deadly nature and punctuated by threats of violence. At Hisoka’s request, Illumi once disguised himself as the magician to infiltrate the Phantom Troupe.

Illumi’s role becomes central during the Chairman Election arc, where he serves as the primary obstacle to Killua’s mission to save Gon. Upon learning that Killua intends to use Alluka’s power, Illumi teams up with Hisoka to intercept him. He reveals his ambition to claim Alluka for himself, stating that he is willing to turn Killua into a puppet permanently if it means acquiring that power. In a desperate confrontation, Killua is forced to use Nanika’s ability to teleport Illumi back to the Zoldyck estate, neutralizing the immediate threat. Following this, his character shows a progression toward greater independence from the family’s passive stance, choosing to actively pursue his own goals. In the Dark Continent arc, he joins the Phantom Troupe as member number eleven, claiming his purpose is to hunt down and kill Hisoka following the magician’s supposed death, with a strange request for a marriage ring as his reward.

Illumi is a master of Nen and belongs to the Manipulator type, a classification that perfectly suits his desire for control. His most defining ability involves the use of specially crafted Nen needles. His primary technique allows him to insert a needle into a person’s head to completely override their will, turning them into mindless puppets known as Needlemen who follow his orders without question until they die. He can even control corpses in this manner, as demonstrated when he forced a dead Mafia don to walk and speak. A more subtle application of this power is the hypnotic suggestion needle, which he used on Killua. Unlike the Needlemen, this does not remove consciousness but instead implants a deep-seated command that triggers overwhelming fear and paralysis under specific conditions.

Additionally, Illumi uses these needles for his highly advanced disguise techniques. By rearranging his facial muscles and bone structure with inserted pins, he can assume entirely different forms like Gittarackur. He notes that this process is extremely painful, yet he bears it without any change in expression. He is also capable of altering his appearance for shorter periods without needles, though with limitations. As an elite Zoldyck, he possesses superhuman physical prowess; he can force his body to sleep for days at a time, ran the first phase of the Hunter Exam without visible effort, and endured his arm being broken by Gon without flinching, showcasing an immense tolerance for pain.
