Description
Masamune Usami is a supporting character in the romantic comedy series Mayo Chiki!. She is a high school student who initially belongs to the S4, a fan club devoted to Subaru Konoe, but later leaves the group. She is also a member of the school’s crafts club. Masamune lives alone, and as a result she has developed domestic skills, notably cooking and knitting. Her appearance is characterized by medium-length purple hair and green eyes, and she has a short stature.

Masamune’s personality is often described as tsundere: outwardly aggressive, irritable, and prone to using sarcasm, but underneath she is insecure, lonely, and genuinely caring. She has difficulty making friends and tends to keep others at a distance. Her aggressive behavior serves as a defense mechanism. She is also known for her formidable leg strength, which she uses in the form of powerful kicks.

Her motivations shift over the course of the story. Initially, she is a devoted fan of Subaru and becomes hostile toward Kinjirou Sakamachi when she suspects he is dating Subaru. She blackmails Kinjirou using a photograph of him on a mock date with Subaru, forcing him to pose as her boyfriend until the school fair. Her goal at that stage is to protect Subaru’s image and possibly get closer to him herself. As the story progresses, Masamune grows closer to Kinjirou and the others, and her feelings evolve into a genuine crush on Kinjirou. She eventually confesses her love to him in the later volumes of the light novel, but he chooses Subaru. Despite her heartbreak, Masamune matures significantly and supports his decision, showing selflessness and emotional growth.

Masamune’s role in the series is that of a secondary female lead and a romantic rival. She begins as an antagonist figure, then becomes a friend and eventually a love interest for Kinjirou, though her feelings are unrequited. She also serves as a foil to Subaru: while Subaru is reserved and duty-bound, Masamune is outspoken and independent. Her relationship with Kinjirou is marked by playful bickering—she calls him “stupid chicken,” and he nicknames her “Usamin,” a pun on her surname that sounds like the Japanese word for rabbit. She also develops a friendship with Subaru and Kanade Suzutsuki, although she remains somewhat wary of Kanade’s manipulative tendencies.

Her notable abilities include her powerful kicks, which she uses both in combat and for comedic effect. She is also a skilled cook and knitter, and she has a talent for handcrafts. As a character, Masamune undergoes a clear arc: from a hostile, blackmailing fan to a loyal friend who learns to accept rejection with grace. Her loneliness and desire for genuine connection are central to her development, and her growth is marked by her willingness to put others’ happiness above her own.
