Description
Elysia de Lute Irma, almost universally called Elsie for short, is a central character in the second season of the anime. She is a demon from New Hell, officially holding the rank of a三等公务魔, or third-class official demon, within the Runaway Spirit Squad, an organization tasked with capturing escaped spirits known as runaway spirits. Despite being over three hundred years old, her appearance and demeanor are those of a teenage girl, which is how she presents herself while living on Earth. To facilitate her mission and maintain a cover, Elsie lives with the series' protagonist, Keima Katsuragi, posing as his father's illegitimate daughter and, by extension, Keima's younger sister. She also attends the same school, Mai-High, as a classmate.
In terms of personality, Elsie stands in stark contrast to her partner, Keima. Where he is cold, calculating, and often cynical, she is cheerful, earnest, and optimistic, a true happy-go-lucky individual. Her nature is fundamentally kind and well-meaning, but she is famously clumsy, scatterbrained, and prone to making mistakes, a fact that leads Keima to frequently label her a bug demon because of all her errors and quirks. Although she rarely shows genuine anger towards Keima's harsh criticisms, she can become deeply hurt by her own perceived incompetence, demonstrating a self-awareness of her limitations. This insecurity stems partly from her past in Hell, where she lived in the shadow of a more accomplished older sister and was often a subject of ridicule due to her lack of academic and practical skills. Despite these setbacks, she is surprisingly resilient and hardworking. Her motivation is clear and simple: to capture runaway spirits. This task is not just a job, as failure would mean the activation of the contract collar around Keima's neck, resulting in his death. A large part of her drive comes from a genuine care for his well-being and a desire to protect him from this fate.
Within the story of the second season, Elsie's role as Keima's partner is fully established. She continues to assist him in his conquests, providing the magical support necessary to force the runaway spirits out of the hearts of the girls they target. Her duties involve using her magical abilities to create disguises, tools, and other necessities for Keima's elaborate plans to make the girls fall in love. Her key relationships are central to this season. Her dynamic with Keima remains the core of the series; she often calls him Kami-nii-sama, meaning God big brother, as a nod to his self-proclaimed title as the Capturing God and their familial disguise. She trusts him implicitly and follows his often incomprehensible instructions without question, even as he derides her for her lack of common sense. The second season also introduces a significant relationship with a fellow demon named Haqua du Lot Herminium. Haqua is a former classmate and a genius who serves as a rival and a source of both admiration and insecurity for Elsie. Their interactions provide insight into Elsie's past in Hell and showcase her capacity for unwavering friendship and loyalty. In one notable episode, when a powerful spirit possesses the distraught Haqua, it is Elsie's genuine affection and acceptance of her friend, despite her lies and failures, that allows Haqua to break free from the spirit's control.
While Elsie does not undergo a dramatic personality shift within the second season alone, her character is consistently reinforced and developed. Her competence as a spirit hunter is subtly highlighted, especially when contrasted with Haqua's initial struggles, proving that despite her clumsiness, her practical experience and partnership with Keima yield results far beyond what her reputation in Hell would suggest. Her relationship with Keima also shows minor evolution, moving from a strictly contractual partnership to one with deeper, though subtle, hints of personal affection and loyalty. Her long history of cleaning for three hundred years before joining the Runaway Spirit Squad remains a defining trait, making her exceptionally skilled at household chores, a fact that unexpectedly aids her missions.
Elsie possesses several notable abilities, most of which are granted by her magical equipment. Her primary tool is a hagoromo, a feathery raiment that she wears like a scarf. This versatile item can change its shape to become almost any object she requires, from a drill to a functioning train engine. It can also alter the appearance of objects and people, create disguises, and even render its user invisible. She is almost never seen without a broom, a remnant from her centuries of cleaning duty. This broom is not only for sweeping but is also a powerful magical conduit she uses for flying and, on occasion, as a bludgeon with surprising destructive force. Her signature skull hairpiece functions as a detector for runaway spirits, alerting her to their presence. Beyond her magical gear, she has a surprising talent for memorizing songs and dance routines, specifically those of the popular idol Kanon Nakagawa. While her cleaning is excellent and her cooking, though often made with dangerous hellish ingredients, is reputedly delicious, her academic knowledge is abysmal; she once mistakenly claimed to be a Japanese history expert, only for it to be revealed that her knowledge ends with the arrival of Commodore Perry in the mid-19th century.
