Description
Night Rikuo is the yokai form of Rikuo Nura, the main protagonist of Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan – Demon Capital. He is three-quarters human and one-quarter yokai, inheriting his powers from his grandfather, the legendary yokai Nurarihyon. When night falls or when he is in complete darkness, his yokai blood awakens, transforming him into a taller, older-looking figure with long white hair, narrowed red eyes, a deeper voice, and the loss of his glasses. This transformation is known as Night Rikuo or the night form.
In this state, his personality shifts dramatically. Where his daytime self is mild-mannered, hesitant, and often submissive, Night Rikuo is confident, commanding, and fearless. He carries an aura of authority that naturally inspires fear and loyalty in other yokai. His primary motivation is to protect both humans and yokai, believing that his dual heritage allows him to bridge the two worlds. He initially resisted his destiny as the third heir of the Nura Clan, but after a series of trials—beginning with the test set by the yokai Gyuki—he fully accepts his role and vows to rebuild the clan under his own banner of Fear.
In the story, Night Rikuo serves as the strategic and combative leader of the Nura Clan during the Demon Capital arc. He leads his personal Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, a growing group of yokai who have sworn loyalty to him through the sakazuki exchange ceremony. His central role is to confront the revived threat of Hagoromo Gitsune and the Kyoto yokai, who seek to bring about a new era of chaos. To prepare for this, he travels to Tono Village to train with powerful yokai and refine his abilities.
Key relationships include his grandfather Nurarihyon, whose legacy he carries; his father Rihan Nura, whose death deeply influences him; and his loyal attendants such as Tsurara Oikawa (a yuki-onna), Kubinashi, Aotabo, Kurotabo, Kappa, Zen, and Jami. He also forms a complex alliance with Yura Keikain, an onmyoji who initially views yokai as enemies but gradually comes to accept Night Rikuo as a protector. His relationship with his daytime self evolves as well: originally unable to remember what his night form did, he later gains awareness and cooperation between the two sides of his identity.
Throughout the Demon Capital arc, Night Rikuo undergoes significant growth. He starts as an inexperienced heir still learning to control his powers, but after intensive training and real battles, he masters several unique abilities. His physical attributes in yokai form are far superior to humans and most yokai: enhanced strength, speed, agility, and remarkable regenerative capabilities that allow him to recover quickly from deep wounds. He wields the spirit blade Nenekirimaru, a legendary sword that only harms yokai, making it a precise tool against supernatural enemies. He also commands the Superior Youkai Sake Sakura, which produces flames that can incinerate opponents. His supernatural skills include Meikyo Shusui, which renders him invisible to his enemies, and Kyouka Suigetsu, a powerful illusion that distorts the target's perception of his movements and position. As he grows, he learns to merge his human and yokai bloodlines for even greater strength, and he can summon and command his yokai allies in battle, coordinating them as a unified force.
