Description
Kappa is a male kappa yokai who serves as a loyal guardian and retainer within the Nura Clan, holding the domain of the fear of water. Originally a follower of Rikuo\'s father, Rihan Nura, Kappa once hid his master and provided him with intelligence following an attack by assassins. He later became a trusted member of Rikuo Nura\'s personal guard and a key figure in his Hyakki Yakko, or demon parade. His birthday is October 30, and he stands 135 centimeters tall, weighing 40 kilograms.
In his natural yokai form, Kappa has a humanoid shape, distinguished by a large white plate atop his head that resembles a broad hat. He has narrow, slit-like eyes that are often depicted as closed, and his hands feature webbing between the fingers. He typically wears a practical ninja outfit with tabi boots. When assuming a human guise to blend into the human world, his head plate is replaced by dark hair styled in a similar shape, and he covers his head with large, high-end headphones. He wears a standard middle school boys uniform of a simple shirt and pants, though his webbed hands remain a noticeable yokai trait.
Kappa is known for his exceptionally calm, laid-back, and quiet personality. He is often described as the type who simply goes with the flow, rarely losing his composure even in serious battle situations. He is a creature of few words, seemingly content to let others speak while he remains in the background. Despite this easygoing nature, he takes his duties seriously and is fiercely loyal, showing great respect for Rikuo. He has a particular fondness for cucumbers and enjoys the simple pleasure of having water poured over his head by his master. In his free time, he listens to music from Western countries on his MP3 player, reads sci-fi magazines, and sleeps in rivers, finding amusement in discovering where the current has taken him when he wakes up.
His primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to the Nura Clan and to Rikuo specifically, whom he has pledged to serve. He exchanged sakazuki, a ceremonial cup of sake, with Rikuo to formalize his oath of fealty. He is not driven by grand ambitions but by a desire to fulfill his role as a guardian and fight effectively for his master, though he pragmatically acknowledges when a situation is beyond his abilities.
Throughout the story, Kappa participates in several key conflicts. During the Shikoku Arc, he is assigned as one of Rikuo\'s bodyguards, keeping watch over Ukiyoe Middle School in his human form. In the anime adaptation, he engages in a one-on-one battle with the enemy Gangi Kozo at the city\'s water purification plant. During the Kyoto Arc, he travels with Rikuo to Kyoto aboard the Takarabune ship. Working alongside the young onmyoji Yura Keikain, his intervention helps rescue the captured yokai Kubinashi and Kejoro from Ibaraki Doji. He later fights alongside his fellow water yokai, Amezo, in the moat surrounding Nijo Castle.
Key relationships include his bond with Rikuo, whom he serves as a guardian, and his connection to Yuki Onna, a fellow clan member who frequently visits him at his swamp to help him clean and shows patience with his extremely calm demeanor. He also forms a quick rapport with Amezo upon meeting him, recognizing their kindred nature as kappa, which allows them to fight effectively as a team.
As a water yokai, Kappa\'s abilities are intrinsically tied to water. He is an adept swimmer and fighter in aquatic environments, able to manipulate water for both offensive and defensive purposes. His signature techniques include the Kappa Secret Ninja Art Mizuchi Sphere, where he creates a large sphere of water to throw at an opponent, which can also cause suffocation. Another ability is the Kappa Ninja Art Hidden Pond Bypass, which uses a splash of water to create a temporary portal connecting to a nearby pond for quick travel. His combat effectiveness depends on being near a water source, a limitation he readily acknowledges.
