Description
Jirou, also known as the Knocking Master, is a legendary figure in the world of gourmet hunting. He is one of the three disciples of the revered Gourmet God, Acacia, placing him among the most powerful individuals to have ever lived. Despite his immense status, Jirou has technically retired, though he continues to hunt for rare and powerful ingredients for his own pleasure. His age is unknown but is estimated to be over five hundred years old, having been alive since the time his adoptive brothers, Ichiryuu and Midora, fought a great war.

Jirou's early life was extraordinary. As an infant, he was found and raised by the Wolf King Guinness, one of the most powerful creatures in the world, who fed him the meat of Red Nitro. In his youth, he was known as the Rampaging Beast due to his brutal and overwhelming power, which was so great that Acacia himself feared it and sealed a portion of his strength to teach him control.

On the surface, Jirou initially appears as a frail, hunched old man with a distinctive large pompadour hairstyle and a goatee. He is rarely seen without his various facial piercings. This appearance is deceiving, as he has the ability to modify his body structure through a specialized form of self-applied knocking, allowing him to increase his muscle mass and size, or revert to a much younger and more powerful version of himself.

In terms of personality, Jirou is an amiable, easygoing, and kindly man who seems to live his life to the fullest. He has a profound and well-documented love for alcohol, considering it the essence of life and believing that it has the power to bring people together across any era. He never forgets a debt of alcohol, and a simple act of kindness, such as being offered a drink, is enough to earn his eternal gratitude. In return for such a gesture, he saved the lives of the protagonist Toriko and the chef Komatsu without asking for anything in return. Despite this friendly nature, he is not someone to be angered, as his power is both immense and terrifying.

Jirou's primary motivation is less about active ambition and more about personal enjoyment. While many seek the ingredient GOD, he pursues it for his own pleasure rather than for any grand scheme. His role in the story is that of a powerful ally and mentor figure. He serves as a guardian to the younger generation, often appearing at critical moments to save the main characters from otherwise insurmountable threats using his unparalleled knocking abilities. His actions and words also serve to foreshadow the true scale of the world's dangers and the power ceiling that exists.

Jirou's key relationships are deeply defining. His chef partner is Setsuno, a legendary chef and elder of the International Gourmet Organization. Their relationship is intimate and enduring, having traveled and hunted together for decades, a period during which they formed an unbreakable bond. He is also the grandfather of Teppei, a skilled Saiseiya who restores the environment. Jirou's sadness upon seeing a once-vibrant hunting ground destroyed deeply influenced Teppei to pursue his career as an environmental restorer. Jirou shares a complex fraternal history with his adoptive brothers, Ichiryuu and Midora, filled with rivalry, teasing, and ultimately, conflict in the face of a world-ending threat.

Throughout the story, Jirou undergoes significant development. He begins as a mysterious, eccentric old man but is gradually revealed to be the key to many of the world's secrets. His power, long sealed away by Acacia, is unleashed during the Cooking Fest arc, allowing him to fight on par with the series' most godlike villains. In his final battle, he uses his ultimate techniques, including Eternal Knocking to temporarily stop an invincible foe, and meets his end after releasing a seal called Damage Knocking, which subjected him to all the accumulated damage he had absorbed over his long life.

Jirou's notable abilities are centered on his mastery of Knocking, a technique typically used to paralyze living creatures. His skill is so profound that his applications go far beyond standard hunting. He can use Hand Knocking to paralyze a powerful creature with a mere finger flick. His Intimidation Knocking allows him to inject himself with needles, growing to a colossal size and frightening away high-level beasts with his mere presence. His most devastating technique is Grand Knocking, a single punch to the ground that is powerful enough to nearly stop the rotation of the entire planet for a split second, simultaneously freezing almost all life on it. He can also use his knocking guns to perform medical miracles, such as restarting a stopped heart or repairing ruptured eardrums. Beyond knocking, Jirou possesses immense physical strength, enough to obliterate the head of a Nitro with a flick of his finger. He also masters Food Honor, a state of extreme concentration and appreciation for food that enhances his abilities and allows him to store vast amounts of energy within his body. His arsenal includes the Guinness Punch, a devastating blast of energy that takes the shape of a wolf, named after his adoptive father, the Wolf King. All of his power is ultimately derived from his Gourmet Cells, which have evolved over centuries, allowing him to manipulate his own body, survive in extreme environments, and regenerate from damage.
