Description
Masao Murasako is a seventeen-year-old resident of the isolated village of Sotoba in the anime Shiki. His background is marked by a shift in family dynamics: he was initially pampered and spoiled by his family, but all of that attention was abruptly transferred to his newborn nephew, Hiromi. This change fostered deep resentment in Masao, and his sister-in-law explicitly notes that he hates his nephew because of it. His upbringing is often cited as a primary reason for his unlikable personality.

In terms of personality, Masao is insensitive, cowardly, and obnoxious. He has a childish, demanding need for everyone's attention and does not handle being overlooked well. He is also blunt and dislikes Natsuno Yuuki, the protagonist. These negative traits make him an unsympathetic figure within the story. His motivations are largely selfish; he craves validation and status, and he resents those he perceives as taking his place or outshining him.

His role in the story is that of a supporting character who initially serves as a minor nuisance within the human community. However, his arc takes a significant turn when he is bitten by the Shiki-turned librarian of Sotoba and becomes a Shiki himself. As a recently turned Shiki, his cowardice and selfishness only intensify. On the night the human villagers begin their revolt against the Shiki, he approaches Megumi Shimizu and begs to run away with her. Megumi immediately refuses, pointing out that he only wants her to come so that he is not the only one disobeying the Kirishiki family's orders.

Regarding key relationships, Masao is friends with the Mutou siblings, especially Tooru, but he harbors a strong hatred for Natsuno Yuuki, who appears to be more capable and respected. His relationship with his family is strained; he resents his nephew and is ultimately betrayed by his sister. In the anime, during the human mob's rampage, Masao attempts to run to his sister for protection, but she beats him over the head with an iron pole and proceeds to stake him through the chest. In the manga, his end is similarly brutal: he first tries to seek refuge, concluding that only his sister will help him. When he arrives home, he pleads to be let inside by his niece, plotting to feed on her and the rest of his family so he can assume control over them. However, Chizuko incapacitates him by throwing a cleaver at his head and then stakes him as he lies hurt.

Masao's development is a descent into moral depravity. He shows no meaningful redemption or growth, instead becoming more predatory and manipulative after his transformation. His notable abilities are those common to all Shiki: he gains superhuman strength and a dependence on blood, but he never displays any special powers beyond the standard traits of his kind. His story serves as a cautionary example of how selfishness and cowardice can corrupt a person completely when given the chance to gain power.
