Description
Natsuno Yūki is a 15-year-old boy who serves as one of the main protagonists of the story. He was originally a city dweller and moved reluctantly to the rural village of Sotoba with his parents when they sought a change of environment. He deeply dislikes village life and longs to return to the city, feeling stifled by the small-town atmosphere. His name, given by his father, strikes him as overly feminine, and he has a complicated family background—his parents are not legally married, and his family register is under his mother’s surname, Koide, though he publicly uses his father’s surname, Yūki.

Natsuno is calm, highly intelligent, and often appears cold and detached, especially toward Megumi Shimizu, a classmate who develops an obsessive crush on him and stalks him. He finds her self-absorbed and cannot stand her presence. Despite this aloof exterior, he is genuinely kind and loyal to a small circle of friends, including Tohru Mutō, Kaori, Akira, and Tohru’s younger siblings. He demonstrates a caring nature when with those he trusts.

His motivations shift over the course of the story. Initially driven by a desire to escape the village, he becomes increasingly drawn into the mystery behind the series of deaths plaguing Sotoba. After noticing strange occurrences and investigating, he discovers the truth about the shiki—vampire-like beings preying on the villagers. His best friend Tohru is forced to turn him into a shiki, but Natsuno becomes a rare “werewolf” type of vampire, similar to Tatsumi, who can withstand sunlight and cannot be killed through ordinary means. Unlike most shiki, Natsuno avoids drinking human blood, which leaves him weaker than other werewolf types but preserves his sense of humanity. He allies himself with Dr. Toshio Ozaki to oppose the Kirishiki family’s plan to turn the entire village into a community of shiki, even as Tohru remains loyal to Sunako Kirishiki.

Throughout the story, Natsuno evolves from a cynical, apathetic outsider into a determined and proactive fighter. His skepticism transforms into a fierce resolve to confront the horrors around him, and he ultimately chooses to sacrifice himself. In the final confrontation, he tackles Tatsumi, dragging them both into a deep pit filled with bodies, and detonates dynamite to bury himself and Tatsumi beneath the rubble. His development reflects a struggle for agency in a world overtaken by darkness, and his relationships—particularly the fraught friendship with Tohru, the unwanted attention from Megumi, and the bond with Kaori and Akira—anchor his emotional journey. His notable abilities include his sharp intellect, resourcefulness, and, after his transformation, the supernatural endurance and daylight tolerance of a werewolf-type shiki, though his refusal to drink blood limits his strength.
