TV-Series
Description
Kazuichi Arai, known almost exclusively by his nickname Pin, is the physical education teacher and baseball club coach at Kitahoro High School. Standing at 193 cm (approximately 6 feet 4 inches) tall with a stocky build, he is the tallest character in the series. His appearance is striking and distinctive, featuring auburn spiky hair, tanned skin, angular eyes, thick eyebrows, and a bright, confident smile. His typical school attire includes a bright orange sweater over training pants, with a whistle hanging from a necklace, though he is also known to wear t-shirts emblazoned with the kanji for "self-conceitedness." While he considers himself very handsome, most people are put off by his ostentatious hairstyle; however, when he lets his hair down, he is conventionally good-looking.
Pin is a former student of Kitahoro High School, having attended about ten years prior to the start of the series. In his youth, he was not only a popular student but also a celebrated star of the school's baseball team, hailed as the "reckless hero of his generation." He was a member of the same youth baseball league coached by Shouta Kazehaya's father, which is how he came to know Shouta, as well as Ryu Sanada and Chizuru Yoshida, from a young age. His talent was so exceptional that he received scouting offers from universities and professional baseball teams. In a pivotal decision that shaped his life, Pin chose to turn down these opportunities. His motivation was a deep-seated love for high school baseball; he desired to relive that experience and nurture future players as the coach of his alma mater rather than pursue a professional career for himself.
On the surface, Pin's personality is loud, eccentric, and overwhelmingly arrogant. He lives by a personal philosophy of "I'm the best," and is frequently seen boasting about himself, singing his own praises, and believing in silly superstitions. His behavior is often childish and undignified for an educator; he enjoys teasing his students, especially Shouta Kazehaya, whose embarrassing childhood stories he uses to manipulate him. He is also a comically unsuccessful flirt, constantly going "girl-hunting" only to be rejected due to his hairstyle and overbearing attitude.
Beneath this facade of self-absorption and immaturity, however, lies a surprisingly insightful and fiercely caring mentor. Despite his initial appearance of not taking his job seriously, Pin is highly observant and genuinely concerned with the well-being and growth of his students. He has a knack for appearing at critical moments to offer surprisingly wise advice, often delivered in a blunt or unexpected way that forces students to confront their own feelings and circumstances. This is most evident in his relationship with Sawako Kuronuma, whose class he becomes the permanent homeroom teacher for after the previous teacher retires. He dismisses the rumors of her being a cursed "Sadako" and later provides her with crucial, if unconventional, guidance during her romantic misunderstandings with Kazehaya. He performs a similar function for other students; for example, he encourages the ambitious but insecure Ayane Yano to pursue her future, while gently turning down her romantic confession and urging her to focus on her own path.
Throughout the second season, Pin's role is that of a catalyst and a source of wry, unorthodox support. He is often the one who, through a joke or a pointed remark, pushes the main characters to take decisive action. His key relationships are grounded in his past and his position as a teacher. He maintains a long-standing friendship with Toru Sanada, Ryu's older brother and his former baseball teammate. His connection to Shouta Kazehaya is particularly complex; he enjoys tormenting him as a pastime but also acts as a responsible guardian, giving him sincere advice when he is troubled. While he may appear to be a simple-minded gym teacher, Pin's abilities lie in his deep understanding of human nature and his profound, if well-hidden, dedication to his students' futures. His ultimate goal is not just to teach but to help them develop the self-confidence he so openly displays, believing it is essential for them to reach their full potential.
