Description
During the events of Second Stage, Keisuke Takahashi is a 21-year-old street racer and the number two driver for the Akagi RedSuns team, a position that places him just behind his older brother, Ryosuke, in skill and reputation. He is known for driving a distinctive yellow Mazda RX-7 (FD3S), a car he is deeply passionate about. Before becoming involved in legal street racing, Keisuke was the leader of a bosozoku, a Japanese motorcycle gang, a past that contributes to his aggressive and direct personality.
Keisuke is characterized by his hot-headed and prideful nature. He is highly emotional, especially when behind the wheel, and has a strong dislike for losing. His driving style is instinctual and feels-based, a stark contrast to his brother Ryosuke, who is analytical and calculating. This difference defines much of their dynamic, with Keisuke often being amazed by Ryosuke's ability to compute and plan, while Ryosuke is impressed by Keisuke's raw, emotional talent. Despite his arrogance, he is known to be popular with fans of the racing scene.
In Second Stage, Keisuke's primary motivations are rooted in his pride and his intense rivalry with Takumi Fujiwara, the mysterious driver of the Toyota AE86. Having been defeated by Takumi in the previous stage, Keisuke is driven by a burning desire for a rematch and to prove his own superiority. He is also deeply invested in upholding the honor of street racing. This is evident in his reaction to the actions of Team Emperor, an invading team from another region. Keisuke expresses disgust at their practice of taking the losing team's stickers as trophies, viewing it as dishonorable and arrogant. He hopes to see them defeated, showing that his sense of justice and code of conduct extend beyond his own personal goals.
His role in the story is that of a formidable rival and a key figure in the Gunma street racing hierarchy. While he is not the primary protagonist, his pursuit of Takumi and his standing as one of the top racers in the area help to frame the challenges and the level of competition. Keisuke’s key relationships are central to his character. His bond with his brother Ryosuke is complex; he respects Ryosuke's superior skills and strategic mind, but his own competitive fire and desire to be the best often create tension. His relationship with Takumi is that of a rival, but one built on a foundation of growing respect. Keisuke acknowledges Takumi's natural talent and unique mental fortitude, even admitting that he himself is not as strong-minded as the younger driver, who can remain calm and fall asleep right before a major race.
As for his development in Second Stage, Keisuke is largely in a state of frustration and anticipation. He is not the primary combatant against the new threats like Team Emperor, but his reactions to the events show a racer who is restless and eager to prove himself. He operates from a position of wounded pride following his earlier loss, and the season focuses more on his internal drive to settle the score with Takumi than on a significant evolution of his character. His notable abilities are his exceptional natural instincts behind the wheel, his mastery of his Mazda RX-7, and his specialization in uphill racing. He is a powerful and emotional driver who can be incredibly fast when his confidence is high, but his performance can suffer if he becomes pressured or believes he cannot win.
