Description
Kazumi Akiyama is introduced in Initial D Second Stage as the younger sister of Wataru Akiyama, a skilled driver from Saitama Prefecture who pilots a Toyota Levin. She is approximately nineteen years old during her first appearance. Initially, Kazumi comes to Gunma to work at an inn run by a relative, seeking a change of pace and a degree of independence from her family life in Saitama.

In terms of personality, Kazumi is portrayed as someone who can be impatient and is not afraid to speak her mind, especially when it comes to defending her family. This is immediately evident when she first meets Itsuki Takeuchi, mistaking his curiosity about her brother's car for mockery and reacting with anger. Despite this initial friction, she shows a warmer and more considerate side as she gets to know Itsuki, appreciating his genuine and earnest nature.

Her primary motivation within the narrative is tied to her personal growth and her search for a sense of self. She is described as having previously lacked her own strong opinions, often following the guidance of her parents and her older brother. Her decision to work in Gunma represents an attempt to step out of this familiar pattern and make her own choices. Later, she is torn between her developing feelings for Itsuki and a past relationship with an ex-boyfriend who seeks to reconcile.

Kazumi's role in the story is largely centered on the subplot involving her brother and Itsuki. She serves as the initial connection between Wataru and the world of Akina, and more significantly, she becomes the first serious love interest for Itsuki. Their relationship, which begins with a misunderstanding, blossoms into a mutual affection during her time in Gunma. The emotional stakes of their connection are highlighted when she decides to return to Saitama, leaving Itsuki heartbroken. Her character reappears later during the Saitama battles in the Project D era, where she and Itsuki reunite and exchange contact information, offering a possibility for their relationship's future, although this is complicated by the return of her former boyfriend.

Regarding key relationships, her bond with her brother Wataru is central. She cares for him deeply but is also one of the few people willing to confront him directly, slapping him when he behaves rudely or loses his temper in conversations about cars. Her relationship with Itsuki evolves from annoyance to deep affection; she credits him as the boy who changed her life, and their farewell is a poignant moment of genuine emotion. Through her interactions with Wataru and Itsuki, Kazumi demonstrates a notable understanding of street racing and car culture, knowledge she passively absorbed from spending time with her brother.

Kazumi undergoes a subtle but important development throughout her appearance. She begins as a somewhat passive individual seeking direction and ends as someone who makes her own difficult decisions, such as leaving Gunma to return home and later addressing her unresolved feelings from her past. Her experiences with Itsuki help her affirm that she wants to make her own choices rather than simply following the path laid out for her.
