Description
Albert "Al" Pitt is an apprentice gnome, which in the world of Aqua means he is a trainee underground gravity management engineer responsible for maintaining the planet's gravity levels to match those of Man-Home. Despite his youthful and childlike appearance, Al is nineteen years old and stands at only one hundred forty centimeters tall. This short stature is a common trait among gnomes, likely due to the unique conditions of living and working underground. He typically wears the dark, uniform-like attire of his profession, along with a pair of glasses, though the exact nature of his eyesight is not clearly defined. He has green eyes and black hair.

Al possesses a gentle and gentlemanly personality, but it is marked by a peculiar and endearing quirk. He has a strong tendency to crack old man jokes or fatherly puns, a habit that often exasperates and irritates his friend Aika S. Granchester, who frequently tells him to stop. His speech patterns and mannerisms can seem much older than his actual age, creating a charming contrast with his youthful looks. He is also a thoughtful and knowledgeable individual, possessing a particular fondness for and deep understanding of astronomy and the stars. This interest is not merely a hobby; he originally aspired to become an astronomer, and his fascination with the terraforming process that made Mars into the habitable planet Aqua ultimately led him to his current career path as a gnome.

Al lives on the floating island of Ukijima. He shares a history there with his two close friends, Akatsuki Izumo, a firefighter, and Woody Udo Ayanokoji, a mail delivery cyclist. Al is a year older than both of them and often acted as the responsible mediator and caretaker of the group during their childhood.

Within the story, Al is introduced as a semi-professional, a skilled apprentice whose abilities with the gravity control machinery are already at a level approaching that of a full professional. However, he is not immune to the vulnerabilities of his profession. Because gnomes spend most of their lives underground, they are unaccustomed to the heat of Neo-Venezia's summer days, and Al is initially prone to fainting spells when exposed to high temperatures.

A significant aspect of Al's role in the narrative is his relationship with Aika. From their first meeting, Aika develops a strong crush on him, though she becomes extremely shy and flustered in his presence. Her friends, Akari Mizunashi and Alice Carroll, often tease her about these feelings. Over time, Al comes to reciprocate Aika's affections, and the two eventually begin a romantic relationship. As a gnome, Al possesses excellent night vision, a natural adaptation to a life spent in the dimly lit underground facilities, which are actually kept quite bright despite his dislike of complete darkness. Over the course of the series, Al develops not only in his personal relationships but also in his career, eventually achieving the rank of a full-fledged gnome and even attending university while continuing his work, though he chooses to remain in the practical field rather than move to a research division because he does not wish to leave the place where he can hear the voice of the planet.
