Description
Shiki, known as the Golden Lion or the Flying Pirate, is a legendary figure and the primary antagonist of One Piece Film Strong World. He is a pirate who rose to prominence during the era of Gol D. Roger, considered one of the Pirate King's greatest rivals and a formidable force who once commanded the largest pirate fleet of his time. Before forming his own crew, the Golden Lion Pirates, Shiki was a member of the infamous Rocks Pirates, serving alongside other future legends.
In terms of appearance, Shiki is a tall, elderly man with a striking and unconventional look. He has long, golden, mane-like hair that reaches the ground, a large golden tuft of a beard, and traditional Japanese attire consisting of a red and black kimono with an orange-trimmed, tattered haori coat draped over his shoulders. The most distinctive feature is a ship's steering wheel lodged into the top of his head, a permanent injury from a past battle with Roger that cannot be removed without risking his life. After escaping the great prison Impel Down by cutting off his own legs, which were chained in sea prism stone shackles, he replaced them with his two trusted swords, named樱十 and枯木, using them as prosthetic limbs.
Personality-wise, Shiki is a man of grand ambition and immense patience, driven by a desire to conquer the world. He is a charismatic leader who cares for his close crewmates like family yet can be brutally cruel to subordinates he deems useless, once shooting a messenger simply for bringing him news of Roger's capture. His mindset is that of a warmonger who cannot tolerate a peaceful era, yet he is not reckless; he is known for his long-term planning and will wait decades to see his schemes come to fruition. Despite his fearsome reputation, Shiki has a surprisingly light-hearted and comical side. He often misidentifies objects and people, is prone to absent-mindedness, enjoys dancing, and laughs boisterously with a distinct "Jihahahaha." He even refers to himself as looking like a rooster due to the steering wheel on his head. He shows a notable fear of storms, likely stemming from a past naval battle where a storm decimated his fleet and led to his iconic injury.
Shikis motivations are rooted in a deep-seated desire for power and control. He believes that with the right ally, such as Roger, conquering the world would be simple. After Roger's capture and execution, which he saw as a humiliation for such a powerful man to die in the weakest sea, the East Blue, Shiki held a grudge against the era itself. He formulated a twenty-year plan to destroy East Blue as a symbolic act of revenge and to send a message of terror to the world. This plan centered around using the IQ plant to create an army of mutated, ferocious animals that would devastate the region and force the World Government to its knees.
In the story of Strong World, Shiki serves as the main threat who directly antagonizes the Straw Hat Pirates. After witnessing Nami's exceptional navigational skills in predicting a cyclone, he tricks the crew, kidnaps her, and forces her to become his navigator by holding her friends hostage on his floating island archipelago, Merveille. His ultimate goal is to unleash his animal army on East Blue, but his plans are directly opposed by Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, leading to a final confrontation.
Shiki's key relationships are defined by his era and his ambition. He held deep respect for his former rival, Gol D. Roger, respecting his power so greatly that he refused to believe the Marines could capture him. He also has a complex, long-standing history with Edward Newgate, also known as Whitebeard, having served together on the Rocks Pirates, and their relationship is one of wary mutual acknowledgment. He is a firm enemy of the World Government and the Marines, particularly his captors Sengoku and Garp. Regarding his own crew, he shares a comedic and eccentric dynamic with his right hand, Dr. Indigo, and his pet gorilla, Scarlet, often forming a slapstick trio. While he admires Nami's beauty and skill, his respect is conditional, and he abandons her without hesitation upon her betrayal.
Shiki's development is shown through his resilience and unwavering focus. Following his defeat and imprisonment, he underwent a drastic transformation, mutilating himself to escape and spending two decades in seclusion perfecting his plan for revenge. This period highlights his immense willpower and dedication to his long-term scheme, ultimately becoming a relic of a bygone era clashing with the new generation of pirates represented by the Straw Hats.
Notable abilities make Shiki an exceptionally dangerous opponent. He is a master swordsman who effectively fights using the two legendary blades attached to his legs, capable of generating powerful long-range slashes. His power is greatly augmented by the Float-Float Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to make himself and any inanimate object he touches levitate and fly at will. He can lift entire island chains into the sky, control massive volumes of earth shaped into lion heads, and manipulate water or other materials for attack, though he cannot use this power on other living beings. Combined with his powerful ambition and tactical mind, these abilities cement his status as a legendary pirate who once stood equal to the Pirate King himself.
