Description
Oni-hige, whose real name is Onita Gunkichi, is an instructor at the private school Otokojuku in Sakigake!! Otokojuku. He serves as the main instructor of the first-year students, the class that includes the central characters of the story. His nickname translates as "Demon Beard," and his appearance matches that fearsome name: in the original manga he wears a military uniform modeled on the Imperial Japanese Army, while in the anime adaptation he appears in a kendo uniform and is portrayed in a more exaggerated and comedic manner.
His background is explored gradually across the wider Otokojuku series. Later material establishes that he is a former soldier who fell into despair as a repatriated serviceman in the period after the Second World War, and that he met the young Heihachi Edajima during that time. He came to admire Edajima's character and joined in the founding of Otokojuku, devoting himself to the school and to his superior with absolute loyalty. His father, a figure known as Oni-hage, appears in the prequel story about Edajima's youth.
In terms of personality, Oni-hige is outwardly a stern and overbearing disciplinarian. He is a strict Spartan instructor who subjects the first-year students to unreasonable punishments and brutal training routines, and he is also described as petty and egotistical. The students generally dislike him, although they have occasionally shown concern for his well-being. His intimidating looks undercut his attempts at leisure: when not teaching, he likes to go to Harajuku to try to flirt with women, but they tend to run away from him because of his frightening appearance. Beneath the harsh exterior, however, he has a sentimental and caring side. He genuinely cares about the welfare of his pupils, and he is known to shed tears when the students are sent into life-threatening contests, revealing an educator's love hidden behind his cruel methods.
His motivation centers on forging the delinquent students into strong, disciplined men through rigorous training. He sees harshness as a necessary part of education and carries a sense of pride as both an instructor and a former soldier. His loyalty to Headmaster Edajima is the anchor of his conduct, and he enforces the school's extreme traditions without question.
Within the story, Oni-hige functions as the enforcer of daily discipline at the school. He is responsible for the first-year students' training, delivers the school's notorious punishments, and adds comic relief through his vanity, temper, and failed romantic pursuits. He also serves as a guardian of the school's everyday order, providing a familiar presence that contrasts with the deadly tournaments and battles the students face elsewhere.
His relationships are defined by his place in the school hierarchy. He is completely devoted to Edajima, whom he treats as both master and savior. He forms a long-running trio with two fellow instructors, Hikoubou and Tetsu Kabuto, bickering and cooperating with them as comrades. With Momotaro Tsurugi and the other first-year students, he has a tense teacher-student dynamic: he torments them with severe training, yet he recognizes the abilities of the strongest among them and genuinely worries for their safety when they head into danger. A significant tragic relationship is with his son, Gunpei, whose death in a later installment drives Oni-hige to attempt a suicidal act of revenge involving explosives; in keeping with the series' tendency to bring characters back, he survives.
His development moves him from a one-dimensional harsh instructor into a more sympathetic figure. The anime version leans further into comedy, while later chapters of the series reveal his military past, the source of his loyalty to Edajima, and the depth of his feelings as a father and educator.
As for abilities, Oni-hige is not presented as a martial artist on the level of the top students or the headmaster. His strengths lie in his imposing physical presence, his authority as a disciplinarian, and his role as the executor of the school's extreme training methods. He is capable of carrying out the punishments and endurance exercises that are central to Otokojuku's harsh brand of education, and his forceful personality makes him an intimidating figure to the first-year students under his charge.
