Description
Ippei Tazawa is a memorable supporting character from the anime Sakigake!! Otokojuku. Physically, he sports a short, flat-top hairstyle with medium-length sideburns and a muscular build typical of the students at the academy. His most distinguishing features are his signature circular glasses and a thin, painter's brush mustache, which contribute to his self-proclaimed image as the intellectual of the group.

Known by the nickname the Brains of Otokojuku, Tazawa is a paradoxical figure whose actual intelligence is highly questionable. Despite his earnest claims to scholarly prowess, he frequently makes fundamental errors in simple subjects, most famously demonstrating an inability to correctly recite the multiplication tables. In one notable instance, he proudly declared that nine times nine equals eighty-eight, a moment that encapsulates his comedic role within the series. He is similarly flustered by basic English, once mistaking Roman letters for Italian, and employing broken, nonsensical phrases in a confrontation.

However, Tazawa is not defined solely by his lack of academic rigor. He has rare but undeniable flashes of genuine ingenuity and practical intelligence. During the Daiishin Paren Seiha Arc, he conceived the plan for the Ten Thousand Man Bridge, a human bridge formed by the entire student body to allow his comrades to cross a river, demonstrating strategic thinking and leadership. His most impressive feat of intellect is his surprising ability to construct a functional robot from scrap and junk parts during the Fu'un Rakanjuku Arc, a skill that stands in stark contrast to his struggles with elementary arithmetic.

Tazawa serves a primary role as a gag character, often paired with his classmates Hidemaro and Matsuo in the series' comedic moments. As the narrative shifts toward more serious battle arcs, his role is reduced from a main character to a supporting figure. Despite his lack of conventional martial arts prowess, his value lies in his spirit and loyalty. In a deeply emotional moment during the Ten Thousand Man Bridge plan, he and Matsuo endured immense physical strain to hold the bridge together, seemingly sacrificing themselves for their comrades. While this created a powerful memorial atmosphere with the entire school singing in their honor, the two characters humorously survived by falling into the river below.

His family background indicates his father is named Tazawa Shintaro, and in his professional life outside the academy's brutal curriculum, he is listed as a general contractor. While he is ridiculed for his intellectual failures, his determination to present himself as a learned man and his occasional moments of saving the day with an unorthodox invention or a clever, if desperate, plan make him an enduring part of the Otokojuku ensemble.
