Description
Kiyomi Tsubakiyama is a first-year student at the notoriously brutal private school Otokojuku. He is a tall, chubby young man who, like his peers, wears the standard school uniform known as a gakuran. He has a distinctive appearance that includes a pompadour hairstyle, sideburns, and a small mustache, giving him an unexpectedly mature look.
Despite his imposing size, Kiyomi possesses a personality that is fundamentally timid and cowardly. He struggles immensely with the school's extreme physical training and harsh environment, which often leaves him feeling overwhelmed and out of his depth. This lack of backbone and tendency toward fear are balanced by a notable gentleness; he has a deep kindness within him that is most clearly expressed through his love for small animals. He keeps a pet canary, whom he names Pee-ko, and the bird becomes his closest companion and a source of emotional strength within the merciless walls of Otokojuku.
Kiyomi's initial motivation is a simple but difficult one: to survive and escape. Enrolling at Otokojuku with the hope of becoming a real man, he quickly finds the reality of the training to be unbearable. This leads him to make a desperate decision to flee the school at night with his pet canary. His escape attempt, however, is short-lived. He is intercepted by Gonda Umanosuke, a powerful second-year student also known as Oniyokozuna, who challenges him to a contest.
This confrontation becomes the pivotal moment in Kiyomi's role within the story. He is forced into a brutal "Spike Thicket Sumo" match, a sumo wrestling ring surrounded by sharp spikes. Initially, he is beaten badly, his cowardice nearly ensuring his defeat. The turning point comes when Gonda reveals that he has eaten Kiyomi’s beloved pet canary. This horrific news shatters Kiyomi's timidity, replacing it with a raw, explosive rage that unleashes a surprising amount of physical strength. Fueled by vengeance and grief, he fights back ferociously and wins the match, knocking Gonda from the ring. Following this event, and with further intervention from his classmate Momotaro when other second-year students attack him, Kiyomi finds his courage and makes the critical decision not to leave Otokojuku.
His most significant relationship is with Momotaro Tsurugi, the series' protagonist. Momotaro acts as a catalyst for Kiyomi's development, directly intervening to protect him and, in doing so, helps Kiyomi discover his own inner strength. His relationship with his pet canary, Pee-ko, is also fundamental, as the bird's death is the traumatic event that pushes him beyond his limits. After this experience, Kiyomi becomes more confident and remains a part of the student body. For the remainder of the series, he transitions from a would-be deserter into a supportive background figure, often appearing alongside other students to cheer for Momotaro during major arcs such as The Four Great Trials of Terror and The Great Heaven-Challenging Olympic Tournament.
In terms of abilities, Kiyomi is not a skilled fighter in the traditional sense and lacks any formal techniques. His primary innate talent is his gentle way with small animals. However, his most notable power is his latent physical strength, which only manifests when he is pushed into a state of intense anger, as demonstrated during his sumo match against Gonda. While generally one of the weaker students, this hidden potential proves that he is capable of great feats when his emotions are pushed to the extreme.
