Description
Arthur Butman is one of the two adopted brothers of the main protagonist, Georgie, in the anime Lady Georgie. He and his older brother, Abel, are the biological sons of the Butman family, who took in the infant Georgie after finding her in the Australian wilderness during a storm. Arthur grows up on the family farm in late 19th century Australia, believing Georgie to be his true younger sister for much of his childhood.

In terms of personality, Arthur is depicted as the more gentle, rational, and self-sacrificing of the two brothers. He is known for his kind and caring nature, often putting Georgie’s happiness and well-being above his own desires. Unlike his more impulsive and passionately possessive brother Abel, Arthur is more reserved and struggles to keep his romantic feelings for Georgie hidden in an effort to maintain the family's peace and protect Georgie from a painful truth. He is frequently seen trying to mediate conflicts, particularly those caused by his mother's resentment towards Georgie and his brother’s intense jealousy.

Arthur’s primary motivation throughout the story is to protect Georgie and ensure her safety and happiness, even if it comes at the cost of his own. This is demonstrated in a pivotal scene where Georgie, after being cast out by her adoptive mother, falls into a river. Arthur rescues her and, in a desperate attempt to save her from hypothermia, uses his own body heat to warm her, a scene noted for its dramatic intensity. He often acts as a foil to Abel, choosing to keep the secret of Georgie's adoption to preserve their life together, whereas Abel wishes to reveal the truth so he can openly pursue her.

Arthur's role in the story is central as a key figure in the love triangle that drives much of the series' drama. He represents a stable, caring, and devoted love interest for Georgie, though his love remains largely unrequited as her heart belongs to Lowell J. Gray. As the plot moves from Australia to London, Arthur’s role becomes more active and perilous. He follows Georgie to England and, after discovering a dangerous conspiracy involving the powerful Duke Dangering, is captured and held prisoner. This captivity is a major story arc, where Arthur endures significant hardship and is forced to act as the fiancé of Maria Dangering, the Duke’s daughter, who genuinely cares for him.

His most important relationships are with Georgie and his brother, Abel. His love for Georgie is deep and genuine, but he consistently prioritizes her feelings, leading him to step aside in favor of her chosen love, Lowell, and even to physically fight Abel to prevent him from forcing his affections on her. His relationship with Abel is complex; they are close brothers but become rivals for Georgie's love. Despite this, Arthur shows loyalty to Abel, and their bond is ultimately tested but not broken by their rivalry.

Throughout the series, Arthur undergoes significant development. He transitions from a protective older brother and hidden admirer to a character who must confront his own suffering directly. His imprisonment in London hardens him, yet he remains a fundamentally sympathetic figure. In the anime's conclusion, he is freed and, along with Abel, returns to Australia with Georgie, having accepted that they will live together as a family once more.

Notable abilities shown by Arthur include his physical strength and swimming skill, as demonstrated when he rescues Georgie from the river. He is also portrayed as a competent and brave individual, willing to face great personal danger to protect his family and uncover the truth about the conspiracy against Georgie’s birth father. His most defining ability, however, is his emotional resilience and capacity for selfless love.
