Description
Kureha Sazuka is a young lieutenant and a prodigy within the special police force known as the Tokko division, having joined at the age of eighteen. Her most distinguishing physical feature is her very long blonde hair, a deliberate change from its original brown color she made after the Machida massacre as a way to symbolically move forward. She bears a symbiont tattoo on her right shoulder, identical in location to that of her teammate Sakura Rokujo. In combat she favors a pair of daggers with retractable blades, wielding them with speed and precision that are further enhanced by the supernatural abilities granted through her symbiont.

Her background is marked by profound personal tragedy. During the phantom attack that resulted in the massacre, both of her parents were killed, and she was forced to take the life of her younger brother Akito with her own hands when he became a danger. This event is the core of her motivation: she fights to prevent similar losses and to reclaim the fragments of the Box of Dirge before the phantoms can spread further. The trauma manifests in a calm, sometimes cold professionalism on the job, but she also channels it into a strong will and a pragmatic approach to the mission, as shown when she fatally wounds Ranmaru Shindo and throws him into the Machida hole in order to forcibly awaken his latent phantom so that he can join the fight.

Her personality combines capability, flirtatiousness, and underlying vulnerability. She is highly confident in her skills and rank, and she displays a keen and openly expressed interest in Ranmaru, particularly his appearance and history. Although she kisses him during a visit to her family’s grave, that moment does not develop into a deeper romantic relationship once the bond between Ranmaru and Sakura grows stronger. Later she continues to tease and casually flirt with him, adopting a light-hearted demeanor that partially masks the weight of her past.

Within the Tokko unit, Kureha operates alongside Ryoko Ibuki, Sakura Rokujo, Takeru Inukai, and eventually Ranmaru Shindo. Her role is to hunt rogue phantoms and neutralize lesser larval parasites, tasks for which conventional firearms are useless. The symbiont within her provides not only increased physical abilities but also potent regeneration, allowing her to heal from severe injuries rapidly, including the replacement of lost limbs. This resilience makes her a dangerous and enduring combatant who can press an attack even after taking critical damage.

Throughout the story her development is seen less through dramatic personal transformation and more through the gradual revelation of how she has already remade herself after her family’s death. The hair color change, her wielding of dual daggers, and her ability to make calculated, hard decisions all show a woman who has processed grief by turning it into resolve. Her teasing interactions with Ranmaru and her steady presence on the team underscore a character who, despite everything lost, continues to fight with determination and a measure of humanity.
