Description
Juugo Yokomizu is a police officer serving as an inspector with the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Headquarters, assigned to its Criminal Investigation Division. He is 35 years old. Juugo is the younger of a pair of identical twin brothers; his elder twin is Sango Yokomizo, an inspector with the Shizuoka Prefecture Police. While they share the same facial features and build, they can be distinguished by the shape of their heads or hairstyles, and they have contrasting personalities.

Juugo has a harsh, stern, and impatient demeanor, presenting a stark contrast to his more passionate and easygoing brother. His habitual sinister or intimidating stare often makes him appear unapproachable. He is particularly critical of the private detective Kogoro Mouri, habitually calling him by the wrong nickname, Smoking Kogoro, a reference to Mouri's heavy smoking habit. He is often annoyed by the presence of Conan Edogawa and the Detective Boys at crime scenes and is not afraid to yell at them to stay away.

Despite his gruff exterior, Juugo is a capable and sharp investigator. He is skeptical of suspects' alibis and quick to spot discrepancies in a case, and he can resolve intricate mysteries with only minimal hints. While he may initially dismiss the young detectives, he does listen to their opinions and statements when solving a case. He also possesses a strong sense of morality and is not above using physical force when a criminal makes especially contemptible statements. In the line of duty, he is competent in action and willing to endanger himself to protect civilians.

Juugo's motivation stems from a desire to solve crimes and see justice served, operating with an old-school, upright approach to detective work. His role in the story is as a recurring police authority figure, often leading investigations in Kanagawa Prefecture, including in several film installments such as The Raven Chaser. His key relationships include his twin brother. Despite their different personalities, they stay in touch and assist each other on cases. Juugo is also a superior to traffic officer Chihaya Hagiwara. While he often scolds her for reckless actions, he shows a softer side when he covers for her and has shown a personal interest in her, leading to hints of a developing relationship between them.

Juugo's character has seen some development over time, particularly with an increased focus on his connection and budding romantic subplot with Chihaya Hagiwara. His notable abilities include sharp deductive skills, a quick eye for forensic details from a crime scene, and a physical readiness for action, including the use of wrestling moves to subdue suspects. A childhood memory reveals that while both he and his brother were afraid of swimming in the ocean, Juugo was more courageous, at least willing to go near the water, and as a result, he learned to swim while his brother never did.
