Description
Kaito Wanijima is a central character in Air Gear, known by the fearsome nickname Shinjuku Crocodile. He serves as the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department's Special AT Countermeasure Unit, an organization commonly referred to as the Windstorm G-Men. This unit was created specifically to enforce laws regulating Air Treks (ATs), and Kaito acts as the natural enemy of all storm riders, pursuing and arresting them with brutal efficiency. Physically, he is an imposing figure, standing 192 centimeters tall with a slender build, and is characterized by his long silver hair and a fashion sense that often resembles a rock star.
Kaito's personality is marked by extreme sadism and a ruthless demeanor. He carries a cigarette constantly and is known for his crude language, treating the storm riders he hunts with open contempt. His methods are violent and unorthodox; his standard equipment includes a bullwhip and a gun that fires rubber bullets, which he uses without hesitation against both criminals and ordinary citizens who get in his way. At first glance, he appears to view his younger brother, Akito, as nothing more than a tool or a caged pet, keeping him confined and subjecting him to harsh punishment. However, this cruelty masks a deeply complex and twisted form of affection, as he is ultimately driven by a profound personal tragedy rather than simple malice.
The core of Kaito's motivation lies in the events of his past, which are revealed gradually. Ten years before the main story, he was not a policeman but the foul-mouthed leader of a rebellious skateboarding gang called Yellow Rain. During this time, he rescued a wounded girl named Gazelle, who was on the run from the powerful Takeuchi brothers. Gazelle was a member of the Gravity Children and possessed a dangerous power known as the Thorn Regalia. Kaito fell in love with her, and she became pregnant with his child. When the Takeuchi brothers, Sora and Nike, tracked them down to claim her power, the couple fled. Trapped on the icy sea during their escape, Gazelle committed suicide to prevent her power from being stolen, leaving Kaito to be rescued from the freezing waters alone. This loss transformed him. Vowing revenge against the Takeuchi brothers, he abandoned his life as a delinquent, passed a university entrance exam, and joined the police force, rising through the ranks specifically to gain the authority and resources needed to hunt them down.
Kaito's relationships are defined by this traumatic backstory. The most significant is with Akito and the alternate personalities Agito and Lind (Rindo) Wanijima. While publicly referred to as his younger brothers, it is ultimately revealed that the child carried by Gazelle was saved by a scientist named Dr. Minami and implanted with his late lover's personality. The three personalities residing in that body—Lind (the original Gazelle), Akito, and Agito—are therefore his biological children, not his siblings. His harsh treatment of Akito is a tragic and misguided expression of his unresolved grief, as he sees the different personalities as fragments of the woman he loved and lost. He also plays a pivotal role in the larger conflict against the Takeuchi brothers, indirectly feeding information to characters like Kilik to incite the collapse of the original Sleeping Forest from within as part of his long-term revenge scheme.
In terms of development, Kaito transforms from a chaotic delinquent leader into a disciplined but equally ferocious agent of the law. While his outward methods remain brutal, his role in the story evolves from an initial antagonist to a more complex anti-hero. When the final battle against the Takeuchi brothers' organization, Genesis, occurs, Kaito joins the fight directly, boarding their aircraft carrier with a rocket launcher to support his children and settle his decade-old grudge. His journey is one of a man consumed by vengeance, using the structure of the police force as a vehicle for a deeply personal war.
While Kaito is not a primary Air Trek user in the same league as the series' main riders, his notable abilities lie in his tactical intelligence and relentless brutality. As the leader of the Windstorm G-Men, he has access to advanced, specially designed ATs that are hidden in his pant legs and deploy around his footwear, allowing him to pursue riders on equal kinetic footing. However, his preferred combat methods rely on psychological intimidation and ranged weaponry, using his whip to control space and his customized rubber bullet gun to incapacitate targets without killing them, as he is still an officer of the law. He has no superhuman powers, openly declaring himself to be just an ordinary human, yet his sheer force of will and tactical acumen allow him to stand alongside the super-powered Gravity Children in the story's climactic battles.
