Description
Mari Tomita, known by the nickname Tom-Tom or Ton-chan, is a supporting character in Air Gear. She serves as the homeroom teacher for Itsuki Minami, the main protagonist, at Higashi Junior High School. A former student of the same school herself, Tomita is young, cute, and noticeably inexperienced as an educator, which makes her an object of fantasy for many of her male students. She has a bubbly and cheerful personality that matches her youthful appearance, often coming across as childish. Despite this, she harbors a persistent anxiety that she might be molested or assaulted by students or strangers, though she doesn't always react to these fears with the seriousness one might expect. Tomita’s motivations are rooted in a desire to be helpful and to be accepted by those around her, which leads her to become involved with the AT team Kogarasumaru. She lends them her small car for travel and accompanies them to watch key battles, functioning as a supportive non-combatant member of the group. Her key relationships include her students, particularly Ikki, and her former teacher Orihara Masaya, the school’s academic head who frequently scolds her for her lack of professionalism. Throughout the story, Tomita shows little personal development in terms of skills or character depth, remaining a comic-relief figure who provides logistical support and a touch of everyday normalcy to the high-stakes world of Air Treks. She has no notable combat or riding abilities, but her role underscores the blurred lines between school life and the underground racing culture that drives the series.
