Description
Ladock Lanzard, primarily known by his assassin alias Zuuma, is a central antagonist in the anime series The Slayers Evolution-R and its predecessor The Slayers Revolution. He is a highly skilled and feared assassin, regarded as one of the most formidable in his world, and his true identity is that of a wealthy and seemingly respectable merchant. In his public life, Ladock Lanzard is the head of a prosperous trading family, a position he uses to move freely within society and gather information. This dual existence allows him to function as both a legitimate businessman and a killer for hire.

Zuuma's motivations are rooted in a personal vendetta. His father was an unscrupulous businessman who accumulated many enemies over his career. These enemies eventually caught up with him, leading to the ruin of the Lanzard family and the death of his father. Zuuma came to believe that Lina Inverse, the sorceress he is hired to kill, was indirectly responsible for these events, and he seeks personal revenge against her. This revenge is the primary driving force behind his actions, and he pursues it with a cold and relentless determination. He is not driven by greed or a desire for power in the conventional sense; his goal is singular and deeply personal.

In the story, Zuuma is initially employed by the sorceress Gioconda to eliminate Lina Inverse and her companions, as well as to retrieve a replica of the Sword of Light from the prince Pokota. He is a persistent and dangerous threat, appearing multiple times to challenge Lina and her group. In Evolution-R, his role becomes more complex as he also possesses the Hellmaster's Jar, an artifact that holds the soul of the Red Priest Rezo. This item makes him a target for the demon Xellos, who seeks the jar for his own purposes. Zuuma uses his possession of the jar and his dual identity to manipulate events, luring Lina into traps under threats to harm innocent people. His role shifts from a simple hired assassin to a key player in the struggle over the artifact.

Zuuma's key relationships are defined by his mission. His primary and most intense relationship is with Lina Inverse, whom he sees as his ultimate target and the cause of his family's downfall. This fixation makes their confrontations personal and violent. He also has a manipulative relationship with Gioconda, who hires him but is also using him as part of her own schemes. His interaction with Xellos is one of mutual wariness, as Xellos desires the Hellmaster's Jar that Zuuma carries. His public identity as Ladock Lanzard allows him to interact with the group under false pretenses, offering to hire them while secretly plotting against them.

Across the series, Zuuma shows little in the way of traditional character growth or redemption. His development is marked by a deepening of his obsession with revenge and a willingness to sacrifice his own well-being to achieve his goals. He adapts to the group's strength, retreating when necessary and using his cunning to set new traps. His resolve does not waver, and he continues to pursue Lina even after suffering severe injuries. His arc ends with him acting on his vendetta, but his ultimate fate is tied to his possession of the jar and the outcome of the larger conflict surrounding it.

Zuuma's notable abilities are a combination of stealth, physical combat, and magic. He is highly proficient in taijutsu, or hand-to-hand combat, and is a capable swordsman. He frequently uses a unique magical technique that allows him to shroud an area in thick, obscuring dark mist, which he can use to disorient his opponents and move silently within it to launch surprise attacks. This mist is a key part of his fighting style, giving him a significant advantage in ambushes. He is also shown to be extremely resilient and able to continue fighting despite severe wounds. His skill set is that of a master assassin, relying on speed, concealment, and decisive strikes rather than overwhelming magical power.
