Description
Keuluk, also known as Kluke, is a central character from the Blue Dragon anime series. She begins her journey as a ten-year-old girl living in the peaceful Talta Village, where she is the childhood friend and neighbor of the protagonist, Shu. An orphan, Kluke lost her parents prior to the start of the story, a tragedy that has shaped her resilient yet vulnerable nature. Unlike her game counterpart, who aspires to be a doctor, the anime version of Kluke is a gifted mechanic with a natural talent for understanding, operating, and repairing complex machinery. Her skills with machines prove invaluable to her group of friends throughout their adventures.
In the first season, Kluke has a spirited and somewhat fiery personality. She is often shown wielding a unique gun that shoots pink fists and riding a motor scooter, showcasing her proactive and capable attitude. She is not afraid to speak her mind and frequently engages in arguments with Shu, often expressing her hidden affection for him through teasing and bouts of jealousy. This is particularly evident with the arrival of Bouquet, towards whom Kluke feels a strong rivalry. Despite her sometimes aggressive and headstrong exterior, which is characteristic of a tsundere archetype, she is deeply caring and loyal to her friends, and her greatest fear is being useless to them. This fear is a primary driver for her character, as she is the last among her immediate companions to awaken her Shadow, the legendary Phoenix, in the fourteenth episode. Her desire to gain power to protect everyone finally manifests her ability, though the initial use drains her energy and leaves her in a short coma.
The story of Blue Dragon sees Kluke grow from a mechanic and supporter to a key warrior. After the battle against the darkness concludes, a two-year time skip reveals a greatly matured Kluke at the age of twelve. Having lost her Shadow powers along with the other warriors, she has chosen a peaceful, quiet life away from conflict. She resides in a small mountain village where she works as a caretaker for orphaned children and tends to the injured Andropov, a former enemy who became an ally and now lives with her. In this second season, her personality has softened considerably; she is calmer, wiser, and more maternal, resembling the kind and nurturing nature of her Shadow, Phoenix. Although she initially refuses Shu’s plea to rejoin the fight, her Shadow is resurrected by the being Noi, and she ultimately returns to the team to assist in the final battles, using her abilities to support her companions.
Kluke shares several key relationships that define her role. Her bond with Shu is the most significant, evolving from bickering childhood friends to something deeper; while she has a clear crush on him, she struggles to admit her feelings directly, especially in the first season. Her relationship with Jiro is another important friendship from their shared past in Talta Village. A notable dynamic shift occurs with Andropov, as the two develop a close bond during their time living together in hiding, where she becomes his caretaker. Her Shadow, the Phoenix, is not merely a power but a distinct entity with a kind, motherly voice that guides and teaches Kluke how to protect her friends.
Kluke’s notable abilities are intrinsically linked to her Shadow, the Phoenix. In the anime, the Phoenix is depicted as a large, typically magenta or pink bird. Unlike in the video games where it is an offensive magic-user, the anime version of Phoenix specializes in defensive and supportive abilities. Its primary powers include generating powerful protective barriers, such as the Feather Protect, and the rare and critical ability to teleport individuals over great distances to safety. After achieving a power-up, Phoenix also gains the ability to reflect enemy attacks. Kluke herself, independent of her Shadow, possesses sharp intellect and mechanical expertise, allowing her to pilot and fix airships and other advanced technology, making her the team's resident engineer and strategist.
