Description
Halbert Magna is a 19-year-old human male standing over 190 centimeters tall, possessing a solid build, broad shoulders, and distinctive red hair. He is the son of Glaive Magna and a childhood friend of Kaede Foxia. Initially serving in Duke Georg Carmine's army, Halbert held strong anti-royalist views and publicly criticized King Kazuya Souma's policies, like the dismissal of corrupt nobles. An argument with Kaede at a cafe, where he declared intent to join Carmine's rebellion while the disguised king and retinue listened, nearly resulted in treason charges. Instead of execution, he was reassigned to the Forbidden Army under Kaede Foxia's command as discipline.
Resentful of his road construction labor initially, Halbert was placated by Souma's experimental cuisine. He rescued the dark elf Velza during a landslide operation in the God-Protected Forest. His combat prowess emerged in the One Week War, defending Randel fortress against Zemish mercenaries and rebellious nobles; he attacked enemies at range using fire-wreathed throwing spears, aiding the successful defense until Souma's reinforcements arrived. Later, during the siege of Van in Amidonia, he led a platoon on the Elfrieden army's left wing. In a decisive clash, he bisected an enemy general's torso and beheaded the general's horse, causing Amidonian soldiers to flee and earning him the moniker "Hal the Red Ogre".
Halbert evolved from hot-headedness to disciplined maturity. After the war, he proposed to Kaede Foxia, formalizing their relationship. On a mission to the Star Dragon Mountain Range, he accidentally forged a magical contract with the dragon Ruby, resulting in a polygamous marriage to both Kaede and Ruby.
He specializes in fire-element magic, channeling it through weapons to create explosive effects or engulf his spears in flames. His primary armaments are the enchanted Twin Snake Spears from the Republic of Turgis, connected by a chain. These withstand his fire magic without disintegrating and can be retrieved via their chains, though mastering their complexity demands significant skill.
Halbert maintains a unique rapport with King Souma, permitted to bypass formal etiquette. This positions him as Souma's counterpart: Halbert embodies impulsive, martial leadership, contrasting the king's strategic, administrative approach. Their differences extend to their dragon companions; Halbert partners with the conventional red dragon Ruby, while Souma contracts the wingless Naden.
