Description
Inspector Ginzo Nakamori serves as a police officer with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, holding the rank of inspector within the Second Division, which is nominally responsible for handling fraud and intellectual property cases. However, his professional identity is almost entirely defined by a singular, all-consuming pursuit: the capture of the elusive gentleman thief, Kaitou Kid. This dedication has been a lifelong endeavor, as Nakamori has been involved in chasing the phantom thief ever since he first joined the police force, unaware that his pursuit has spanned two different individuals—the original Kaitou Kid, Toichi Kuroba, and the current Kid, Toichi's son, Kaito. Before this fixation took over his career, he was a homicide inspector, a role he ultimately set aside to focus all his energies on the Kid.
Nakamori is known for a personality that is as fiery and boisterous as it is self-assured. He is often seen loudly directing his officers and can quickly lose his composure when one of his meticulously laid plans goes awry. His confidence is immense, frequently leading him to cackle with anticipated victory at the thought of Kaitou Kid ensnared in his latest trap, and his many public failures never discourage him from proudly declaring on live news broadcasts that he will surely capture his quarry next time. This impulsiveness is often his downfall; he is easily drawn into chasing obvious decoys or prematurely shutting down security systems, allowing the real Kid to escape. Despite his relentless and determined nature as an officer, he is consistently outsmarted by Kid, who always finds a way to evade capture even when seemingly cornered.
The motivation driving Nakamori is the belief that capturing Kaitou Kid is his life's purpose, a mission he has dedicated his career to achieving. This has led to a complex dynamic with his nemesis. While he harbors an intense dislike for the thief and the frustration he causes, Nakamori also possesses a grudging respect for the Kid's abilities and, more importantly, his moral code. He willingly acknowledges that murder or any similar capital crime is completely beyond the phantom thief's nature, a conviction so strong that he reacts with shock when he believes Kid has used a real firearm. Paradoxically, while he yearns to arrest Kid, he also becomes depressed and worried during periods when the thief does not send out any heist notices, as it leaves him with a sense of purposelessness.
Within the story, Nakamori's role is that of the determined law enforcement rival to Kaitou Kid. He is a dedicated and capable officer, yet he is always outmaneuvered by the thief's superior cunning and theatrical flair. Although he is not one to readily ask for assistance, he has come to heavily appreciate the help of Conan Edogawa, who often lends a hand in trying to outsmart and capture the Kid. Key relationships define his character further. He is the father of Aoko Nakamori, but his all-consuming dedication to his work often limits the time he can spend with her. There is also a notable professional rivalry with others in his field, particularly a fierce competition to be the one who finally captures Kaitou Kid, looking down on those like detective Saguru Hakuba who might claim that honor instead. He also harbors a contentious relationship with private detective Kogoro Mori, with the two often finding themselves at odds during investigations.
In terms of abilities, Nakamori possesses a sharp intuition and a keen sense of his environment, being able to sense when he is being watched by the Kid. He has demonstrated capable deductive reasoning, particularly when it comes to cracking codes and ciphers, which is a necessary skill in his line of work. However, his most defining trait is not a singular power, but his extensive experience. Years of chasing the same phantom thief have given him a profound, if often futile, understanding of Kid's methods, though his own impulsiveness consistently undermines his knowledge. Outside of his police work, he is depicted as being responsible for cooking at home, and he is noted to have a low tolerance for alcohol, becoming easily intoxicated.
