Description
Goro Otaki is a chief inspector serving with the Osaka Prefectural Police Headquarters, specifically within the First Investigation Division's Violent Crimes unit. His name origin can be traced back to the character Gorozo Otaki from the novel series Onihei Hankacho. In his first appearance in the manga and anime, he is involved in the Naniwa Serial Murder Case, and he continues to be a recurring figure closely associated with the Osaka region.

Physically, Otaki possesses a sturdy and imposing build, which is complemented by a noticeable scar located on his right eyebrow. Despite this rather intimidating appearance, his personality is notably gentle and kind-hearted. He is highly dedicated to his work, approaching his duties with seriousness and a strong sense of responsibility. He is also willing to take personal responsibility for actions he deems necessary, such as when he actively intervenes to prevent a suspect's suicide and faces a reprimand from his superior as a result.

Otaki maintains several key relationships within the series, with one of his most significant being with the high school detective Heiji Hattori. Heiji often seeks out Otaki when he requires information for an important case, leading to a close working friendship between the two. Heiji addresses Otaki with the friendly and respectful honorific han, while Otaki, in turn, affectionately calls Heiji by the nickname Hei-chan. Otaki is also a good friend and subordinate to Heiji's father, Heizo Hattori, the head of the Osaka Prefectural Police, as well as to another superior, Ginshiro Toyama.

In the tenth Detective Conan movie, The Private Eyes Requiem, Otaki plays a role that provides further insight into his personal connections. During the events of this film, it is revealed that he has a cousin named Aoki, who serves as a police officer with the Kanagawa Prefectural Police. This revelation adds a layer to his background, showing his family ties within law enforcement beyond the Osaka region.

Throughout the series, Otaki demonstrates notable abilities, particularly in the area of information gathering. His skill in efficiently collecting relevant data is such that he has been informally nicknamed a search engine just for Heiji, highlighting his efficiency and resourcefulness. He also has a background as a baseball player, having been a catcher for his high school team. His team even managed to reach the top eight in the national high school baseball tournament, known as the Detective Koshien, and his passion for the sport remains as he continues to watch the national championships even in his career as a police officer. His favorite food is said to be takoyaki.
