Description
In Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa, Izumi Curtis is the formidable master alchemist and martial artist who served as the teacher to Edward and Alphonse Elric. By the time the film’s events unfold, her presence is felt largely through her lasting influence and the circumstances surrounding her health. She lives in the southern Amestrian town of Dublith with her husband, Sig Curtis, where they run a butcher shop. Despite her humble profession, she possesses immense power and knowledge.

Izumi’s background is marked by profound loss. Years before the story of the film, she attempted a forbidden human transmutation in a desperate attempt to revive her stillborn child. This act, which violated the laws of alchemy, exacted a heavy toll. As the equivalent exchange for glimpsing the truth behind alchemy, she lost several of her internal organs, which left her with a chronic, debilitating condition that caused her to cough up blood, particularly after strenuous activity. This experience also rendered her unable to bear children and gave her the rare ability to perform alchemy without drawing a transmutation circle, simply by clapping her hands together.

Personality-wise, Izumi is a complex figure. She takes pride in calling herself a simple housewife and presents a calm exterior, but this belies a fearsome and explosive temper. She is notoriously violent and strict, especially towards the Elric brothers, whom she disciplines with physical force. However, this aggression stems from a place of deep care and wisdom. She is remarkably perceptive, warm-hearted, and acts as a mother figure to Edward and Alphonse, a role she embraces fully after taking them in as apprentices in their youth. She firmly believes in self-reliance, often stating that "one is all, all is one," a philosophy that emphasizes the connection between the individual and the wider world. She disapproves of using alchemy as a shortcut for every task, preferring to do things by hand to maintain discipline and respect for hard work.

In the continuity of the 2003 anime series and its film sequel, Conqueror of Shamballa, Izumi’s personal tragedy is directly linked to the homunculus Wrath, the failed result of her human transmutation. This created a deep and complicated relationship, as Wrath both hated his creator and sought her affection. Her key relationships outside of this include her doting and protective husband Sig, and her former students, the Elric brothers, towards whom she feels a strong sense of responsibility and maternal love.

Regarding her role in Conqueror of Shamballa, the key development is her death. She is deceased by the time the main plot of the film takes place, having succumbed to her long-standing illness. It is her husband, Sig, who conveys this information to Winry Rockbell. While she does not actively participate in the film’s primary action, her legacy drives the motivations of other characters, particularly the homunculus Wrath, who seeks to find his "true mother" after her passing. Her notable abilities, while not showcased in the film due to her death, are legendary. She was one of the most powerful alchemists in the world, capable of instant transmutation, exceptional hand-to-hand combat, and immense physical strength, such as overpowering bears.
