Description
Karl Haushofer is a character from Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa, continuing the narrative of the 2003 anime series. His character is based on the historical German general, geographer, and geopolitician of the same name. In the film, he is depicted as a former German army general who becomes a professor at the University of Munich in 1921. Shortly after arriving in the city, the ancient alchemist Van Hohenheim meets Haushofer and impresses him with his vast knowledge of alchemy, earning the professor's respect.
Haushofer is a member and key figure within the secretive Thule Society, an organization that merges occult beliefs with the rising nationalist political ambitions of the time. He serves as an introduction for Van Hohenheim into this society, hoping that Hohenheim's understanding of alchemy could help open a portal to another world. Haushofer's role in the story is primarily that of a supporting antagonist whose actions enable the main conflict. He is deeply involved in the society's plots, which include manipulating the rocket research of the young scientist Alfons Heiderich. Haushofer's goal is to use this technology combined with alchemical sacrifice to create a stable gateway to the parallel world of Amestris, which the Thule Society refers to as "Shamballa".
His relationship with Van Hohenheim is central to his role. While he initially allies with Hohenheim out of mutual interest, Haushofer ultimately betrays him. He permits the Thule Society to use Hohenheim as a direct sacrifice in their grand ritual to force the portal open, an act that leads to Hohenheim's death. Haushofer also holds a significant position within the Thule Society's hierarchy, introducing the main antagonist, Dietlinde Eckhart, as the organization's chairman. Throughout the film, he shows little regard for individual lives, viewing people and their knowledge as tools to achieve the society's ambitions. After the Thule Society's main ritual fails and their attempted coup collapses alongside Adolf Hitler's failed Beer Hall Putsch, Haushofer's direct involvement ends, and he is last seen observing the aftermath from a distance. He does not possess any alchemical or supernatural abilities himself but relies on his political acumen, his academic standing, and his knowledge of the Thule Society's resources to manipulate events and people toward his goals.
