Description
Fritz Lang, also known by the alias Mabuse, is a character in Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa who exists as the parallel world counterpart of King Bradley from the original 2003 anime series. In the film’s setting of 1920s Germany, he is a Jewish film producer living in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. He initially introduces himself to Edward Elric under the name Mabuse, which is the name of a character from his own films, such as The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. Lang is portrayed as a calm, intelligent, and resourceful individual who is opposed to the rising Nazi movement and the Thule Society. His personality is marked by a thoughtful, artistic nature, and he often reflects on the power of cinema and imagination. He is motivated both by a personal sense of decency and a desire to see the truth prevail, which leads him to assist Edward despite their initial uneasy meeting due to Edward’s suspicion of his resemblance to the homunculus Führer. Lang plays a key supporting role in the story by providing Edward with crucial information about the Thule Society’s plans to open a gateway to the world of Amestris, which they mistake for the mythical utopia Shamballa. He also helps Edward understand the historical and political situation in Germany, acting as a mentor figure. His most important relationship is with Edward, whom he gradually earns the trust of and partners with to thwart the Thule Society’s ambitions. He also shows concern for Noah, the Romani woman Edward rescues. Lang does not undergo a personal transformation; rather, he serves as a steady, morally grounded ally. He has no supernatural or combat abilities, but his knowledge of filmmaking, his connections, and his understanding of human nature make him valuable. His appearance includes a monocle, a detail that mirrors the real historical filmmaker and visually echoes King Bradley’s eyepatch. Through his actions and words, Lang embodies the theme of dreams versus reality that runs throughout the film.
