Description
Karl Haushofer is a character from the 2005 film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa, which continues the narrative of the 2003 anime television series. In the film, he is portrayed as a German former general who becomes a professor of geography and geopolitics at the University of Munich after retiring from the army.

Haushofer is introduced as an individual with a deep and abiding interest in esoteric knowledge and alchemy. When he first meets Van Hohenheim, the long-lived alchemist who has recently arrived in Munich, Haushofer is profoundly impressed by Hohenheim's vast understanding of alchemical principles. This respect leads him to sponsor Hohenheim's entry into a powerful and secretive occult organization, the Thule Society. Haushofer believes that the society's mystical resources and ambitions may hold the key to helping Hohenheim achieve his personal goal of reuniting with his son, Edward Elric, who is trapped in the parallel world of Amestris.

As the film progresses, Haushofer's motivations are revealed to be more complex than simple scholarly curiosity. He is deeply entangled with the Thule Society, a group that merges occult rituals with burgeoning political ambitions tied to the rise of the Nazi movement in 1920s Germany. The society's ultimate goal is to open a portal to Shamballa, which they believe to be a mystical kingdom; in the context of the film, Shamballa is revealed to be their term for the gateway to Amestris, Edward Elric's home world. To achieve this, Haushofer manipulates the rocket research of Alfons Heiderich, a young scientist and friend of Edward Elric, planning to use the technology as part of a massive ritual requiring a tremendous alchemical sacrifice.

This places Haushofer in a central antagonistic role. His key relationship is with Van Hohenheim; though they begin as allies united by a shared interest in alchemy, Haushofer ultimately betrays Hohenheim when the opportunity arises. He permits the Thule Society to use Hohenheim as the vital sacrificial component in their grand ritual to tear open the portal to the other world. This betrayal directly leads to the ritual, which results in Hohenheim's death and a brief, violent connection between the two worlds.

Throughout the story, Haushofer is depicted as a pragmatic and calculating figure, more akin to a strategic mastermind than a field operative. He is willing to sacrifice his allies, including his friend Hohenheim, and exploit the work of others, such as Alfons Heiderich, to achieve his geopolitical and esoteric goals. His actions are a driving force behind the film's climax. Following the failure of the Thule Society's ritual and the simultaneous collapse of Adolf Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch, Haushofer's direct involvement in the events ends. His final appearance shows him observing the aftermath from a distance as the society he helped to direct disintegrates around him.
