Description
Minako Akiyoshi is a supporting antagonist in the ninth Detective Conan film, Strategy Above the Depths. She is introduced as the lead designer for the luxury cruise liner Saint Aphrodite, owned by the Yashiro Group. She appears to be a professional, intelligent, and composed woman in her early thirties, with a calm demeanor and an approachable personality. She is an employee of the Yashiro shipping company, working as a marine engineer, and was instrumental in the completion of the cruise ship.
Beneath this composed exterior lies a deeply calculating and vengeful individual. Her true motivation stems from a tragedy fifteen years before the events of the film. Her father, Takeo Okita, was the captain of a cargo ship called the Saint Yashiro Number 1, which sank under suspicious circumstances. Captain Okita was drugged and left to die in the sinking, a crime orchestrated by the Yashiro family and their associates to collect insurance money. Minako Akiyoshi discovered the truth of this conspiracy, and her grief transformed into a cold, methodical desire for revenge against every person she held responsible for her father's murder.
In the story, Akiyoshi works alongside Hironari Kusaka, a screenwriter whose own father was also a victim of the same conspiracy. Kusaka plans a series of murders against the Yashiro family. However, Akiyoshi secretly manipulates his scheme, using it as a cover for her own more precise and ruthless plan. She orchestrates three murders: she killed Hideto Yashiro, an architect, prior to the cruise by causing a car accident. She then murders Takae Yashiro, the company president, on the ship by posing as her and tricking Kusaka into thinking he committed the act. She also kills Entaro Yashiro, the company chairman, by stabbing him during a struggle between him and Kusaka, ensuring Kusaka takes the blame. She also plans to kill Captain Wataru Kaido, the first officer from fifteen years ago who she believes was complicit in her father's death. She ultimately corners Captain Kaido with a spear gun, revealing her true identity as Takeo Okita's daughter.
Her key relationship is with her father, whose memory drives her every action. She shares no genuine camaraderie with Hironari Kusaka, viewing him only as a useful pawn. She reveals a notable physical capability, engaging in a hand-to-hand fight with Kogoro Mouri and initially overwhelming him with her combat experience, showing she is both physically and mentally formidable.
Throughout the film, Akiyoshi maintains a facade of innocence and cooperativeness, even folding a paper boat for Conan Edogawa during an interview, a subtle clue that Conan later pieces together. Her character experiences no redemption; her sole development is the revelation of her true, vengeful nature. Her abilities include exceptional intelligence and manipulation, allowing her to construct a complex double-frame plot that initially fools both the main characters and the police. She also possesses detailed knowledge of the ship's engineering and layout, which she uses to plant additional bombs to ensure the vessel sinks, showing a willingness to sacrifice many lives to complete her revenge. She is ultimately confronted by Kogoro Mouri, who deduces the truth, and is subdued before the ship fully sinks.
