Description
Conan Edogawa, who is the shrunken form of the high school detective Shinichi Kudo, serves as the central protagonist in Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths. His background in this film is consistent with his established origin: after being poisoned by the Black Organization, his body was reduced to that of a six-year-old child, though he retained the full intellect, memories, and deductive reasoning of his true seventeen-year-old self. In this ninth theatrical feature, set primarily aboard a luxury liner called the Saint Aphrodite, Conan continues to operate under this dual identity, concealing his true nature from most of those around him while investigating a complex string of murders connected to a fifteen-year-old shipwreck. His physical appearance remains that of a young elementary school student with dark brown hair, large blue eyes, and his signature oversized red bow tie and glasses, which are actually voice-changing and tracking devices provided by his inventor ally, Professor Agasa.
Conan's personality in this film is marked by a sharp contrast between his outward behavior and his internal reality. Externally, he maintains the persona of a curious and occasionally childish young boy, referring to Ran Mouri as Ran-neechan and Kogoro Mouri as Occhan. However, his internal monologue reveals the mature, confident, and often calculating mind of Shinichi Kudo. He is driven by a powerful sense of justice and an intense curiosity that compels him to unravel every mystery he encounters. Despite his young appearance, he displays remarkable calmness under pressure, whether investigating a crime scene or coordinating efforts to save passengers from a sinking ship. A notable aspect of his personality is his pride in his deductive abilities, which makes him particularly observant of the actions and deductions of those around him, especially Kogoro Mouri.
Conan's primary motivation remains the pursuit of truth and justice, as well as the protection of those he cares about, particularly Ran Mouri. In Strategy Above the Depths, his immediate goal is to correctly identify the culprit behind the murders on the cruise ship. He is deeply motivated by a desire to solve the case before the wrong person is convicted, and he is shown to be invested in ensuring that the correct sequence of events is uncovered, even when it means stepping back and allowing someone else to take the lead. Unlike his typical role, where he covertly solves cases for the bumbling Kogoro, this film sees Conan initially pursuing one suspect while Kogoro pursues another. Conan's motivation shifts from simply being the one to solve the mystery to ensuring that the ultimate truth, regardless of who discovers it, comes to light. He is also profoundly driven by a need to protect Ran, which becomes the central focus of the film's climax, as he risks his own safety to rescue her from the flooding lower decks of the ship.
In the context of the story, Conan serves as the primary investigator and the audience's anchor to the mystery. He is the first to notice inconsistencies in the initial explanation of the crimes and follows the trail of evidence to the true culprit, Hironari Kusaka. However, the film subverts the usual formula by having Kogoro Mouri be the one who identifies the mastermind, Minako Akiyoshi, while Conan is focused on Kusaka. Conan's role, therefore, evolves from the lone genius to a crucial part of a larger team. He also acts as the leader of the Detective Boys, guiding Mitsuhiko, Ayumi, and Genta as they pursue the fleeing Kusaka on jet-skis, demonstrating his strategic thinking and willingness to take direct action. Ultimately, his role culminates in a desperate rescue mission, where he uses his keen observation and memory—specifically recalling that Ran mentioned hearing a soccer ball, which revealed her location in a sealed room with hard walls—to find her before the ship completely sinks.
Key relationships are central to Conan's character in this film. His relationship with Ran Mouri is one of deep, unspoken affection and protection. He watches over her constantly, and his panic when she goes missing drives the film's final act. Though she sees him only as a child she must protect, Conan's actions reveal his adult love for her. His relationship with Kogoro Mouri undergoes a notable development. Typically, Conan views Kogoro as a fool he must manipulate to solve cases. In this film, however, he is genuinely surprised and impressed when Kogoro deduces the true killer, Akiyoshi, based on her resemblance to his estranged wife. Conan internally acknowledges Kogoro's brilliance in that moment, showing a newfound respect for the older detective. His relationship with the Detective Boys is one of reluctant camaraderie; he often finds their childish antics tiresome but ultimately relies on their help and protects them from danger. Ai Haibara serves as the only other person in his peer group who knows his true identity, and she provides quiet support and cynical commentary on his behavior, particularly his obsessive need to save Ran.
Conan's character development in Strategy Above the Depths is subtle but significant. The primary development is his learning to trust and respect Kogoro's instincts and deductive abilities, even when they initially contradict his own. The film places Conan in a position where he is not the singular hero solving the crime; he must acknowledge that he was on the wrong track while Kogoro was correct. This moment of humility and recognition of another's skill is a departure from his usual role as the undisputed smartest person in the room. His character arc reinforces that even a genius detective can learn from others and that justice is served not by individual glory, but by the collective pursuit of the truth. The film ends with Conan reflecting positively on Kogoro's deduction, demonstrating growth in how he views his rival and caretaker.
Conan displays his full range of notable abilities in this film. His most prominent skill is his genius-level deductive reasoning, which he uses to piece together the sequence of the murders, identify Kusaka as the immediate culprit, and ultimately locate Ran. He also demonstrates his encyclopedic knowledge and physical prowess, particularly through his love of soccer. A key scene shows him using a volleyball as a soccer ball, dribbling and kicking it against a wall, a skill that later provides the crucial auditory clue for locating Ran. Professor Agasa's gadgets are also featured; his voice-changing bow tie allows him to mimic other characters, and his enhanced kicking shoes provide him with superhuman kicking power, which he uses to strike objects with pinpoint accuracy and force. Furthermore, Conan exhibits exceptional leadership and courage, organizing the Detective Boys to pursue a criminal and willingly re-entering a sinking ship to save Ran, showcasing that his most defining ability is not just his intellect, but his unwavering determination to protect the innocent.
