Description
Kanu Unchou is a central figure in the narrative, a third-year student at Seito Academy and the spiritual successor to the legendary Chinese general Guan Yu from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Known as the Goddess of War or God of Martial Arts, her reputation as the most feared and powerful fighter in the Kanto region precedes her. At 19 years old, she has a tall, muscular build with tanned skin, long dark purple or black hair that reaches her feet and often covers one eye, and light blue-grey eyes. Her Seito Academy uniform is a distinctive and revealing modification of the standard sailor outfit, consisting of a white blouse with blue stripes and a yellow ribbon that leaves her midriff exposed, a matching blue skirt, loose white socks, and brown shoes. She carries two legendary weapons: the nearly invincible Blue Dragon Crescent Blade, a guandao intrinsically linked to her chi, and the mythical sword Kusanagi.
Kanu Unchou's personality is defined by an unwavering and fierce loyalty, particularly to her school's student council president, Gentoku Ryuubi. She believes her destiny is to die protecting Ryuubi, and this devotion drives nearly all of her actions, leading her to endure capture, torture, and immense personal sacrifice to ensure Ryuubi's safety. While she is extremely lenient and patient with Ryuubi's whims, she is otherwise a proud and disciplined warrior who relentlessly trains to prove herself worthy of the title she has inherited. Despite her formidable exterior, she struggles with deep-seated emotional vulnerabilities, including unspoken romantic feelings for Ryuubi, which she eventually acknowledges to herself and confides in others, such as Koukin Shuyu. Her overconfidence can be a flaw, as seen when it leads to her arm being broken by Ryomou Shimei, though this experience contributes to a later shift toward greater humility.
Kanu's role in the story is fundamentally that of a guardian and a warrior of immense power. In the first anime adaptation, she makes a brief but memorable appearance in the Great Fighters Tournament, effortlessly defeating four opponents before facing Ryomou and Hakufu Sonsaku. Her overconfidence costs her when Ryomou breaks her arm, but Kanu nevertheless defeats both Ryomou and a dragon-state Hakufu using only her legs and one functioning arm. Despite being expected to win, she unexpectedly forfeits the tournament, stating Seito has no interest in its goals.
Her role expands significantly in the second season, Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny, where she is a main character. Her invincibility is tempered to make her more relatable, and she is portrayed as more insecure and less flirty. To protect Ryuubi from the aggressive Kyosho Academy, Kanu makes the morally complex decision to defect and side with the enemy leader, Moutoku Sousou. She wears a darker costume during this period, symbolizing her defection, but her loyalty to Seito's leader never wavers. She is captured, handcuffed, stripped, and beaten, yet she voluntarily remains a prisoner to protect Ryuubi from further danger, even refusing release when the Dragon Jade is offered in exchange. It is later revealed she was holding back her immense power, as she easily breaks free from her restraints. Ultimately, she follows the advice of Shiryuu Chou-un to stay away from Ryuubi, allowing her young leader to grow and blossom independently. She returns at the pivotal Battle of Chibi to defend Ryuubi, and by the end of the series, remains her guardian and close friend.
Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Gentoku Ryuubi is the most significant, evolving from a sense of duty to a deep, personal, and romantic attachment. Her relationship with Ryomou Shimei is marked by the prophecy that Ryomou is destined to kill her, a fate that looms over their encounters. She has an old friendship with Genjou Kakouton and Kakuka, and shares a bond with Ekitoku Chouhi and Shiryuu Chou'un as part of Ryuubi's Five Tiger Generals. Her interactions with Sousou are tense and wary, as she threatens to kill him should he ever harm Ryuubi. She also serves as an advisor and occasional challenger to Koumei Shokatsuryou, testing the strategist's worthiness as Ryuubi's protector.
Throughout the series, Kanu's character develops from an almost invincible, overconfident warrior to a more humble, emotionally complex individual. She confronts her first real defeat at the hands of Genchoku Jousho, which challenges her self-perception of invincibility. She learns to balance her protective nature with the need to let others grow, culminating in her decision to step back and allow Ryuubi to become a stronger leader. Her journey is one of reconciling her immense martial strength with her deep, often conflicting, emotional loyalties.
Kanu's notable abilities are extensive. She possesses overwhelming chi, which she can project for powerful attacks and use to enhance her physical capabilities. Her mastery of the Green Dragon Crescent Blade allows for devastating slashing and stabbing techniques. She is also highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, and possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, and endurance. A key demonstration of her resilience is her ability to fight at a high level even with crippling injuries, such as defeating a transformed Hakufu while using only one arm. Her tactical intelligence makes her an effective leader, though she can struggle with improvisation. Her immense power is so great that she is considered to be holding herself back whenever she is captured or restrained, able to break free at will.
