Description
Touta Matsuda is the youngest member of the National Police Agency's special task force assembled to investigate the serial killer known as Kira. He joins the team with minimal experience, driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to prove himself among more seasoned investigators.

Matsuda's personality is marked by enthusiasm, optimism, and an outgoing nature. He often lightens the mood of the team with his lively demeanor and is known for being outspoken. While he can appear naive and clumsy, he is deeply loyal and dedicated to the task force, especially to his mentor, Soichiro Yagami, whom he regards as a father figure. Matsuda's motivations are rooted in a genuine wish to see justice served. He is one of the few members who openly ponders the moral implications of Kira's actions, occasionally expressing sympathy for Kira's initial goal of punishing criminals. This moral ambiguity sets him apart from his colleagues and makes him a more human and relatable figure within the story.

Within the narrative, Matsuda serves as both a source of comic relief and a crucial member of the investigation. One of his most significant contributions comes during the Yotsuba arc, where he boldly infiltrates the Yotsuba Group headquarters without authorization. His actions provide vital information that ultimately leads to the capture of the Kira suspect behind that group. Matsuda also plays a key role in the final confrontation. When Light Yagami is revealed as Kira, Matsuda is the most shocked and outraged, feeling personally betrayed and angry over Light's manipulation of Soichiro. In that climactic moment, he shoots Light to prevent him from writing Near's name, severely wounding him and directly contributing to Light's defeat.

Matsuda's key relationships shape his journey. His bond with Soichiro Yagami is central; Soichiro's guidance gives him confidence and purpose. He initially looks up to Light Yagami as a natural leader and friend, making the eventual revelation of Light's true identity particularly devastating. Matsuda also shares a respectful but sometimes strained dynamic with L, often struggling to keep up with the detective's unorthodox methods. Later, he experiences fear and apprehension toward Teru Mikami, whose fanatical loyalty to Kira unnerves him.

Over the course of the series, Matsuda undergoes considerable development. He matures from an inexperienced and somewhat reckless officer into a more competent and valued member of the team. His growing confidence and willingness to take decisive action are most apparent in the final arc, where his emotional response leads him to play a direct part in ending Kira's reign. After the case concludes, Matsuda remains with the NPA, committed to his career in law enforcement.

In terms of abilities, Matsuda is a capable investigator with skills in surveillance and infiltration. He is also noted for his exceptionally accurate marksmanship, a talent that proves critical in the final battle. More notably, his emotional intelligence and empathy allow him to understand perspectives that more logical characters overlook. While he may not match the genius of L or Light, his determination and humanity make him an indispensable part of the task force.
