Description
Gook is a minor character from the anime and manga series Death Note, where he appears as a resident of the Shinigami Realm, the world of the death gods. His background is that of a typical Shinigami, an immortal being whose primary occupation is to extend their own lifespans by writing human names in their Death Notes, though little is seen of him performing this duty. He is notably a lazy Shinigami who prefers passing time through entertainment rather than labor.

In terms of personality, Gook is characterized by his laziness and his fondness for gambling. He is frequently seen in the company of another Shinigami named Deridovely, engaging in games of chance. Despite his apparent enthusiasm for this pastime, he is described as a poor gambler who often loses. His motivations are simple and align with the broader Shinigami culture of seeking ways to alleviate the profound boredom of their eternal existence. He does not share the same level of curiosity about the human world as his acquaintance Ryuk, nor does he possess the sense of attachment or duty displayed by other Shinigami like Rem.

Gook's role in the story is extremely limited, serving primarily as a background character to populate the Shinigami Realm and provide context for the main Shinigami, Ryuk. He makes his first appearance in the first episode of the anime, where he is seen gambling with Deridovely and witnesses Ryuk departing for the Human World. He does not travel to the human world or directly interact with the main human protagonist, Light Yagami. His appearances are largely confined to the Shinigami Realm, often in flashback sequences where Ryuk explains the nature of their world to Light. He also appears in the Death Note One-Shot Special prologue, where he mistakenly believes Ryuk has gone to the Human World, only to learn it was another Shinigami named Midora. In this scene, he shows a lack of interest in the apples Midora brought back, a fruit that most other Shinigami, particularly Ryuk, find fascinating. His final canonical appearance is in the OVA Death Note Relight 1: Visions of a God, where an unnamed Shinigami questions him and his gambling companions about Ryuk's whereabouts.

Regarding key relationships, Gook is primarily connected to two other Shinigami. He is a gambling companion and friend to Deridovely, with whom he shares most of his screen time. He is also an acquaintance of Ryuk, the central Shinigami of the series, and is seen interacting with him in the realm. Gook demonstrates no significant character development throughout the series, remaining a static figure whose traits and circumstances do not change from his first appearance to his last. His notable abilities are those standard to all Shinigami, which include flight using his large, fur-covered wings, immortality, and the inherent ability to kill humans by writing their names in a Death Note, though he is never shown exercising this power. His physical appearance is distinctive, most notably featuring an animal skull for a head, which has been described as resembling a cattle or goat skull with long horns. He also wears a large, dark-green beaded necklace and has yellow eyes, with patches of brown fur covering parts of his body including his shoulders and back. The character designer, Takeshi Obata, stated that he designed Gook to look like a simple monster, choosing an animal skull rather than a regular human skull to make the design more interesting.
