Description
Cytomander, often referred to as Cytomander the Swift, is a character who serves as one of the Four Supreme Generals directly under the Spiral King. Physically, he is the most human-looking among the four generals, but his avian heritage is clearly marked by distinct features including a rooster-like crest in his hair and peacock-feather-like decorations adorning his back. His tall stature and flamboyant attire, which includes a colorful outfit with a long, white furry collar, reflect his regal status and his vain personality.
As a beastman, his genetic makeup is a hybrid that blends human and bird traits, which heavily influences both his appearance and his role. His name is a portmanteau derived from the DNA chemical cytosine and the mythical fire elemental salamander, while his personal Gunman, Shuzack, takes its name from the mythical Vermilion Bird, Suzaku.
In terms of personality, Cytomander is characterized by a stark duality. When in the presence of his peers or the Spiral King, he typically conducts himself with a calm, regal, and respectful demeanor. However, this composure shatters completely in the heat of battle when his forces begin to lose. Under pressure, he transforms into a manic and aggressive lunatic, prone to exaggerated expressions and manic laughter, showing a narrow-minded and psychopathic streak. This arrogance stems from a belief in his own overwhelming power, as he commands the most formidable aerial force in the Spiral King’s army.
Within the story, Cytomander holds the position of commander of Teppelin's entire aerial forces. He is the owner and captain of the Dai-Gunten, a massive flying battleship that serves as his flagship. His personal Gunman is Shuzack, a slender, humanoid-shaped unit designed for speed and agility, which he pilots into combat. He leads a corps of flying Gunmen, which represent a core offensive power for the Spiral King.
Cytomander’s primary motivation is to eliminate the human resistance group Team Dai-Gurren, initially to avenge the death of his fellow general, Adiane. He pursues them with his overwhelming air power, confident that their lack of flying capabilities makes them easy prey. When this initial assault fails, his motivation shifts to a frantic and desperate defense of the capital, Teppelin, during Team Dai-Gurren’s final assault.
His key relationships are primarily with the other Supreme Generals and his subordinate. He works alongside the other generals Guame and Adiane, showing them respect under normal circumstances. He also briefly accepts Viral, a beastman who has lost his previous commanders, as a subordinate on his ship. This relationship is tense, as Viral refuses to fight dishonorably, which conflicts with Cytomander's more ruthless methods.
Cytomander’s role in the story is as a major antagonist during the war against the Spiral King. He debuts by launching an aerial assault on the Dai-Gurren, forcing the protagonists to adapt. In this battle, he briefly takes Yoko Littner hostage, a desperate act that is ultimately unsuccessful. His development is limited but defined by his descent from a smug, overconfident commander into a frenzied and cornered fighter. He leads a final, two-pronged assault alongside Guame in the defense of Teppelin, showing a ruthless disregard for his own men by using them as cannon fodder.
In terms of abilities, Cytomander’s primary strength lies not in personal combat but in his command of formidable military hardware. His flagship, the Dai-Gunten, is one of the largest of the Dai-Gun-class battleships and is packed with bombs, missiles, and numerous flying Gunmen. His personal Gunman, Shuzack, is equipped with weaponry such as the Majestic Big Chopper. However, despite his presumed power and his claims of being too formidable, his actual combat prowess is limited. He meets his end when his Shuzack is caught off guard and physically rammed by the flying battleship Dai-Gurren, which then sinks his flagship, the Dai-Gunten, killing him in the resulting explosion.
