Description
Mikado Ryuugamine is a high school student who moves from the small town of Saitama to the bustling district of Ikebukuro at the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi Kida, driven by a yearning for an extraordinary life far removed from the mundane existence he grew bored with. He is the primary male protagonist and enters Raira Academy, where he serves as a class representative. On the surface, Mikado initially appears polite, soft-spoken, introverted, and somewhat naive, a result of his sheltered upbringing, and he often feels overwhelmed by the city's scale and energy. However, beneath this meek exterior lies a much more complex and multifaceted individual. His core motivation is to escape a normal life and immerse himself in the city's mysterious and dangerous underbelly, which he achieves by becoming the creator and leader of the anonymous online gang known as the Dollars, using the handle Tanaka Tarou. His role in the story evolves from a curious newcomer into a significant player in Ikebukuro's power struggles, as his involvement with the Dollars and later the Blue Squares gang pulls him into conflicts with various factions. As the series progresses, Mikado's character undergoes a profound transformation, revealing a darker, more calculating, and ruthless side that contrasts sharply with his initial idealism. This is most starkly demonstrated when he stabs Aoba's hand with a ballpoint pen in volume six and later, in a pivotal moment, pours gasoline on the thug Adabashi Kisuke and calmly sets him on fire, shocking even his best friend Masaomi with his cold composure. His notable abilities are not physical strength but strategic intelligence, a strong understanding of social dynamics and anonymity, and a capacity for manipulation and decisive, even cruel, action when he feels the need to protect his organization or achieve his goals. Key relationships define his journey, with Masaomi Kida serving as a charismatic and extroverted counterbalance to his reserved nature, and Anri Sonohara being a quiet classmate for whom he develops romantic feelings, a relationship that eventually becomes official. His interactions with the information broker Izaya Orihara often push him toward embracing his darker instincts, while his alliance with the headless rider Celty Sturluson highlights his capacity for cooperation. Throughout the narrative, Mikado struggles with his identity, wrestling with the conflict between his desire for peace and the violent realities of the world he sought, ultimately developing from a timid idealist into a morally ambiguous and formidable figure in Ikebukuro.
