Description
Nanami Yasuri is the elder daughter of Mutsue Yasuri and Migiri Yasuri, and the older sister of Shichika Yasuri. She was born on Haphazard Island, where the Yasuri family lived in isolation, and spent her entire childhood there without ever leaving until she was a teenager. Her early life was marked by an extreme physical contradiction: she was born with an incurable and painful illness that made her body weak and sickly, yet her body refused to let her die. This chronic suffering meant she experienced constant pain from a very young age, which fundamentally shaped how she perceived the world.

In terms of personality, Nanami presents a calm, gentle, and soft-spoken exterior. She often appears frail and helpless, and her brother Shichika habitually babied her because of her visible physical weakness. Beneath this surface, however, she harbors a deep-seated bloodlust and a fatalistic worldview. Her constant exposure to pain caused her to become emotionally hollow regarding the suffering of others, as she could no longer relate to a normal sense of pain or fear. Killing, to her, felt no different from pulling a weed. This emotional detachment, combined with her formidable intellect, made her disturbingly indifferent to violence. She is highly intelligent and analytical, capable of strategic thinking, but her social isolation on the island left her poor at navigating ordinary social situations.

Her primary motivation is the desire to end her own existence. She viewed her life as unending physical agony and believed that death was the only release. She was aware of the Yasuri family tradition in which members are killed by other members of the bloodline, and she sought to fulfill that pattern by having her brother Shichika kill her. Her goal in leaving the island and following Shichika and Togame was not to help them collect the Deviant Blades but to confront her brother and force him to kill her, thereby ending her suffering and also ensuring his growth as a warrior. She believed that by dying at his hands, she would make him stronger and more capable.

Her role in the story is that of the seventh opponent Shichika faces in the quest for the Deviant Blades. After leaving the island, she obtained the Deviant Blade Akutou Bita and used it to slaughter the monks at Gokenji Temple, where she then waited for Shichika. Their confrontation on Mount Muten was the emotional climax of her arc, ending with Shichika killing her as she had intended.

The key relationship in her life is with her brother, Shichika Yasuri. She acted as a protective elder sister who, in her own distorted way, wanted what was best for him. She forced him to grow by giving him no choice but to fight her to the death, believing this was the only way for him to fully realize his strength. Their relationship is central to her entire character and to the story's themes. Her relationship with her father, Mutsue Yasuri, was distant and marked by his decision to pass over her as the heir to Kyotouryuu because he considered her too powerful to be taught. Her relationship with her mother, Migiri Yasuri, was one of resemblance, as she physically looked like her mother.

Her development is closely tied to her tragic arc. She gradually moved from a passive existence on the island to actively pursuing her own death. She learned to make decisions for herself and to walk her own path, which directly led to her confrontation with Shichika and her final, chosen end. Her arc explores themes of power that cannot be controlled, the desire for release from suffering, and the complex nature of love and protection within a family that treats its members as weapons.

Her most notable ability is called Mikagé, often translated as Watch and Learn or Perfect Observation. This ability allows her to see any technique or skill performed once and immediately analyze, understand, and replicate it with perfect precision on the second use. This made her a natural genius who never had to train or practice to master any martial art or fighting style. She learned the entirety of Kyotouryuu simply by secretly watching her father teach Shichika. She possessed immense raw combat power, which her father considered too great to be safely controlled, and she was already stronger than her father by the age of seven. Her physical body, however, could not handle the strain of her own power, which contributed to her constant illness and weakness. She also possessed extremely keen senses, fast reflexes, and the ability to think many steps ahead in a confrontation.
