Description
Kōmori Maniwa is a member of the Beast Squad within the Maniwa Ninja Corps, one of the twelve heads of that clan. His name means bat, and his clothing and demeanor are modeled after that animal. He is the first opponent that Shichika Yasuri fights in the quest to collect the twelve Deviant Blades. Kōmori wields the Deviant Blade Kanna, a straight sword of unrivaled toughness that is designed to never bend or break; he stores this blade inside his own body by swallowing it. His primary ninja technique, Kotsuniku Zaiku, allows him to shape-shift his body at a fundamental level, enabling him to take on the appearance and abilities of any person. He also possesses an ultimate technique called Houfuku Zettou, a powerful lunging or descending strike. Kōmori is known by the epithet Hades Kōmori, a reference to his tendency to generously send his victims to the underworld with a lavish send-off. His personality is characterized by a high-pitched, distinctive laugh and a delight in deception; he enjoys using his shapeshifting ability to confuse and torment his opponents in battle. He embodies the archetypal ninja ethos of treachery and underhandedness, once betraying his client after successfully locating Kanna in order to claim the sword for himself. This willingness to betray and his resourcefulness make him a relatively trusted figure among the twelve heads of the Maniwa Corps. His motivation is self-serving: he seeks power and advantage through the Deviant Blades, and he shows no loyalty beyond his own gain. In the story, Kōmori serves as the initial confrontation between Shichika and the Maniwa ninja, testing Shichika’s abilities and introducing the threat posed by the organization. His key relationship is with his fellow Maniwa heads, particularly Kuizame Maniwa, with whom he shares a friendly rivalry. He engages Shichika in battle by first impersonating Togame to lower Shichika’s guard, then assuming Shichika’s own form to fight. Despite his cunning, he is ultimately defeated and killed by Shichika, who sees through his impersonation. Kōmori’s development is limited due to his early demise, but his encounter establishes the high stakes and the deceptive nature of the Maniwa ninja that Shichika and Togame will continue to face.
