Description
Kanara Azekura is a pirate who serves as the captain of the Yoroi Pirates, ruling over a port town in Satsuma. He is a tall and imposing man, though his physical appearance is almost never seen, as he is constantly clad in his most prized possession, the Deviant Blade Zokutō Yoroi, a powerful suit of armor. His age is thirty-eight.

Azekura’s background is steeped in tragedy. As a child, he and his younger sister, Kokoro, were on a ship that was attacked by pirates. While everyone else, including his sister, was killed, Azekura was taken captive and forced to serve as a chore boy for the pirate crew that had slaughtered his family. During his years of servitude, one of his duties was to clean and maintain the Zokutō Yoroi, which the pirates kept as a trophy. Approximately five years later, the captain of the pirate band, in a drunken state, allowed Azekura to try on the armor. The moment he donned it, Azekura used its power to annihilate his captors and exact his long-awaited revenge. He then assumed leadership of the pirates, establishing his own base of operations in Satsuma.

In terms of personality, Azekura is boisterous, bold, and highly confident, often teasing or mocking his opponents in battle. He is also noted to be a capable strategist, with Togame herself acknowledging his tactical acumen after he quickly deduces her identity and purpose, and lays out a plan that limits her options. His primary motivation during his encounter with the protagonists is an obsessive infatuation with Togame. He is instantly smitten because she strongly resembles his deceased younger sister, who would have been the same age as the strategist had she lived.

His role in the story is that of the fifth opponent Shichika Yasuri must face in order to collect the Deviant Blades. Rather than wait to be attacked, Azekura proactively confronts Togame and Shichika. He strikes a bargain: he will duel Shichika, and if he wins, Togame must become his woman. He argues that as a stronger fighter and with the resources of his pirate fleet, he would be a more useful ally than Shichika in her quest. The key relationships in this arc are adversarial. He serves as a direct challenge to Shichika, not only physically but also emotionally, by openly declaring his desire for Togame. This dynamic forces Shichika to confront nascent feelings of jealousy and his own identity beyond being merely a sword for Togame.

Azekura experiences a notable development primarily as a catalyst for Shichika's growth. By surviving his defeat—he is thrown into the air and crashes to the ground, making him the first opponent Shichika does not kill —he demonstrates that a battle can be resolved without lethal force. However, he is not entirely gracious in defeat; out of spite for being kicked, he has the ship meant to carry Shichika and Togame re-routed to a different destination, a final petty act of revenge.

His notable abilities are entirely derived from the Zokutō Yoroi. The armor's primary power is an absolute defense, redirecting the kinetic energy of any physical attack into the ground beneath his feet, rendering him nearly impervious to harm. The armor itself is a Deviant Blade, designed with an ocean motif, and is covered in hidden blades across its surface. His ultimate technique is called Touzoku Kamome, where he extends all the hidden blades on the armor, releases superheated steam, and charges at his opponent to cut, crush, and burn them simultaneously. Despite his reliance on the armor, Azekura is a capable and agile fighter, able to keep pace with Shichika and utilize various offensive maneuvers like shoulder checks, headbutts, and grappling throws.
