Description
Himari, whose full name is Himari Noihara, is a central figure in the anime and manga series Omamori Himari. She is a bakeneko, a type of supernatural being known as a yōkai, specifically a demon cat with a long and storied lineage. Her existence is deeply intertwined with the Amakawa family, a clan of demon slayers. Centuries before the story begins, an ancestor of the Amakawa family spared the life of one of Himari’s forebears. Rather than slaying the creature, the demon slayer showed compassion, and in return, that yōkai and all her descendants swore a solemn oath to protect the Amakawa bloodline. This ancient covenant is the very foundation of Himari's purpose and identity.

True to her oath, Himari appears before Yuto Amakawa, the current heir and last surviving member of the family, on his sixteenth birthday. She assumes the role of his personal bodyguard, a living amulet against the ayakashi—hostile spirits and monsters—who bear a grudge against the slayer family and now seek to eliminate its final descendant. Her dedication to this duty is absolute, and she refers to Yuto with the old-fashioned and respectful title of "Young Master," reflecting her deep-seated sense of loyalty and her origins from a bygone era.

In terms of personality, Himari presents a compelling blend of fierce protectiveness and surprising gentleness. She is most often seen wearing traditional Japanese garments and is known for her flirtatious and forward behavior toward Yuto, which frequently brings her into comedic conflict with other girls in his life. Despite her sometimes playful demeanor, she is exceptionally serious when it comes to her mission, willing to sacrifice herself without hesitation to ensure Yuto's safety. Her creator described a rare, gentle smile on the first volume's cover as something unusual for her typically serious character, highlighting the contrast between her warrior's exterior and her inner capacity for warmth. She also exhibits distinctly cat-like traits, including a love for seafood, an aversion to water (beyond bathing), and a particular sensitivity to cold winter temperatures.

However, beneath the surface of the loyal bodyguard lies a profound internal conflict. Himari is not merely a protector; she is a predator by nature. Her ancestors were the kind of powerful, bloodthirsty yōkai that killed and devoured humans. This inherent bloodlust is a central struggle for her. During intense battles, she risks losing herself to a berserker rage, a dangerous state where her eyes turn red and she becomes an uncontrollable force driven by the primal joy of the hunt. She describes this terrifying loss of control as feeling as if her heart has been swallowed by a black pool. This dark side, sometimes referred to as "Black Himari," is a constant threat that she must grapple with, torn between her genuine desire to protect Yuto and her own violent demonic nature.

As the story progresses, Himari's relationship with Yuto deepens considerably. It is eventually revealed that they share a connection from his childhood, when she often visited him in the form of a white cat, a bond that underpins her fierce loyalty and growing romantic affection for him. While she begins as a steadfast guardian, her role evolves as she confronts the darkness within herself. Yuto's acceptance and determination to save her, even when she is on the verge of being consumed by her evil half, becomes the catalyst for her ultimate development. He ventures into her subconscious to pull her back from the brink, leading to a resolution where her darker side is subdued. In the anime's conclusion, this act culminates in Yuto using his inherited power, the "Light Ferry," to transform her into a powerful, purified state called "Super Himari" to defeat the final enemy.

As a bakeneko, Himari possesses a formidable array of supernatural abilities. Her primary weapon is a masterfully crafted katana named Yasutsuna, an heirloom of the Amakawa family, and her skill with the blade is so renowned that she is feared among yōkai as "Noihara's Crimson Blade". She also has the power of shapeshifting, allowing her to take on a full human appearance, a hybrid cat-girl form (with ears and a tail), or the form of a small, talking cat. In all her forms, she exhibits superhuman speed, agility, strength, and endurance, making her a terrifyingly effective combatant. Her greatest power, however, is also her greatest curse: when she succumbs to her demonic nature, she unleashes a raw, overwhelming power that is difficult to control, representing the peak of her abilities at the steepest possible personal cost.
