Description
Himari Noihara is the primary heroine of her story, a bakeneko, which is a type of supernatural cat spirit or yōkai. Her existence is defined by a centuries-old oath of loyalty to the Amakawa family, a clan of demon slayers known as Onmyouji. In the past, an ancestor of the Amakawa family spared the life of Himari’s yōkai ancestor rather than destroying it. Out of gratitude for this mercy, Himari and her lineage swore an eternal vow to protect the Amakawa bloodline. This duty brings her to the side of Yuuto Amakawa, the current heir, on his sixteenth birthday, which is when he becomes susceptible to attacks from other hostile spirits.

Himari is a young woman with long, dark blue hair typically tied into a ponytail with a red ribbon and sharp, red-violet eyes. Her demeanor is often serious and fiercely devoted, but she possesses an unexpectedly playful and seductive side. Her speech patterns are notably old-fashioned, reflecting her age and distance from modern society, and she consistently addresses Yuuto with the archaic and respectful title of "Wakadono," meaning "young lord." Despite her formidable combat abilities, she has a childlike fondness for sunbathing, a dislike of cold weather, and a cat’s instinctive fear of deep water. She can also be intensely jealous of other girls who show an interest in Yuuto, particularly his childhood friend Rinko.

Himari’s primary motivation is the protection of Yuuto Amakawa, a mission she pursues with absolute dedication. She is prepared to sacrifice her own well-being and safety to ensure he is safe from the various ayakashi that seek to harm him. Her duty, however, is deeply intertwined with personal affection. While she is bound by the ancestral oath, her actions are also driven by genuine love and a long-standing emotional connection to Yuuto, as they shared a close bond during his early childhood before his memories were sealed. Her motivation is not just to serve a master, but to stand by the person she cares for most.

In the narrative, Himari serves as Yuuto’s primary guardian and protector, acting as a sword and shield against the supernatural threats that arise. She moves into his home and transfers to his school to watch over him constantly. Her role extends beyond physical protection; her presence forces Yuuto to confront his own heritage and the hidden world of yōkai. Her relationship with Yuuto is the emotional core of the story, evolving from one of formal protector and lord to a more intimate and reciprocal romantic partnership. Her key relationships also include a rivalry with Rinko Kuzaki, Yuuto’s human childhood friend, over his affections, and a complicated dynamic with Kuesu Jinguji, a rival demon slayer who is also betrothed to Yuuto.

As the story progresses, Himari’s central internal struggle comes to the forefront. Her nature as a yōkai includes a deep-seated, bloodthirsty instinct that can cause her to lose control and enter a berserk state where she attacks friend and foe alike. This darker half, sometimes referred to as Black Himari, represents the cruel and violent tendencies of her demon cat ancestry. Her character development focuses on her fear of this inner darkness and her desire to suppress it to stay by Yuuto’s side. In the manga, this conflict culminates in a final battle where Yuuto must enter her subconscious to save her from being consumed by this malevolent side, leading to a resolution where she accepts both parts of herself. The anime adaptation offers a different conclusion, where Yuuto uses his power to purify and enhance her into a powerful "Super Himari" form to defeat the final antagonist.

As a bakeneko, Himari possesses several notable abilities. She is a highly skilled swordswoman, wielding a named katana called the Yasutsuna or Amatsuna, which was gifted to her by Yuuto’s grandfather. She can also fight effectively with her sharp claws. Her physical abilities, including speed, strength, agility, and endurance, vastly exceed those of a normal human, especially when she partially transforms to reveal her cat ears and tail. This transformation often triggers Yuuto’s cat allergy. In moments of extreme duress or when her emotions overwhelm her, she can transform into a more powerful, feral state where her power increases dramatically, but at the cost of her sanity. In the anime, through a process called "Light Ferry," Yuuto can temporarily transform her into an even more powerful, purified state called Super Himari, which harnesses her demonic energy for good.
