Description
Kazuya Aoike is a supporting character in Boys Over Flowers who serves as a childhood friend and brief romantic rival to the protagonist, Tsukushi Makino. His background is defined by a sudden and dramatic shift in social status. Born into a modest family of farmers, Kazuya was a classmate of Tsukushi in elementary school, but the two lost touch after moving on to different middle schools. During his second year of high school, Kazuya’s family sold their land, making a great deal of money through real estate deals. This newfound wealth allows him to transfer to the prestigious and wealthy Eitoku Academy, which is also attended by Tsukushi.
As a character, Kazuya is defined by his loyalty, his earnest nature, and his obliviousness. He is described as fiercely loyal to Tsukushi, openly harboring romantic feelings for her. However, he is also relatively clueless and not very quick to pick up on social cues or the dangers of his new environment. Unlike many of the wealthy students at Eitoku, he does not try to pretend to be from old money. He is known for being open and even humorous about his status as a nouveau riche, often referring to himself as a "newly rich" person. His motivations are largely driven by his affection for Tsukushi; he wants to protect her and be near her, even as his presence complicates her already difficult life at school.
Kazuya’s primary role in the story is to introduce a new element to the existing romantic tensions. He becomes a rival to Tsukasa Domyoji, the leader of the F4, who views Kazuya as a romantic threat to his own interests in Tsukushi. Tsukushi herself is initially relieved to have a friendly face from her past at Eitoku, but quickly becomes worried for Kazuya’s safety because being associated with her often makes him a target for bullies. The other students at Eitoku, including the F4, draw a sharp distinction between his "new money" and their "old money," and he frequently finds himself on the receiving end of their scorn.
His key relationships include his lifelong friendship with Tsukushi Makino, for whom his feelings are clearly romantic, though not always immediately obvious to him or others. He also has a significant antagonistic relationship with Tsukasa Domyoji, who sees him as a rival. Their conflict culminates in a fishing contest during a trip to Atami, where Kazuya tries to prove himself man-to-man against Tsukasa. Later in the story, Kazuya is briefly appointed as a substitute member of the F4 when Tsukasa attempts to replace Rui Hanazawa, leading him to participate in events like a high-stakes basketball game.
In terms of development, Kazuya begins as a naive newcomer who is excited to be reunited with his old friend. He is horrified by the bullying culture at Eitoku but refuses to leave Tsukushi to face it alone. Over time, he gains a slightly more realistic understanding of the school’s social hierarchy, though his earnest and somewhat clueless personality remains largely unchanged. He learns to navigate the world of the wealthy, but his core identity as a straightforward boy from a humble background stays intact. He is not featured in the live-action drama adaptation of the series. Kazuya does not possess any special abilities beyond his knowledge of fishing, which he uses in his contest against Domyoji, and his general resilience in the face of adversity.
