Description
Bertoz, also known by the nickname Tragedy King or Prince of Tragedy, is a prominent antagonist from the fictional world of Vandels and Vandel Busters. He is introduced as a legendary monster, a veteran Vandel of immense power who stands among the highest-ranking seven-star Vandels. His history is deeply connected to the Zenon Warriors, the legendary group of Vandel Busters that included the protagonist Beet's elder brother, Zenon. In a past battle against this squad, Bertoz was a five-star Vandel who pushed them to the brink of destruction. The conflict concluded with Bertoz being left severely weakened and unable to move from his location, though the exact circumstances and the identity of the one who interfered remain a part of his shrouded past.

Due to this immobilized state, Bertoz is forced to act through a phantom, a puppet or fake body created by his friend Noa, a Vandel scholar. This phantom possesses less than one-tenth of the real Bertoz's strength but is still a formidable force used to raid towns and attack weaker Vandels and humans. It is through this phantom that Bertoz first confronts Beet, engaging him in an epic battle. Although the phantom is defeated, the fight serves a greater purpose for Bertoz. He becomes intensely interested in Beet, recognizing him as his awaited enemy, and the battle significantly boosts Beet's fame within the Vandel world.

Bertoz's personality is defined by a warrior's spirit. He lives for challenges and loves to fight strong opponents, regardless of whether they are human or Vandel. He possesses enormous command power and an excellent fighting sense, allowing him to quickly see through an opponent's weaknesses and techniques. While other Vandels like Shagi refer to him as the veteran who never moves, it is suggested that he chooses to remain in seclusion, growing his power in his mountain castle as time passes, waiting patiently for the day he can face Beet in a true battle. Despite his fearsome nature, he values his friendship with the scholarly Noa, seeing in his friend the traits that he himself lacks.

In the story, Bertoz serves as a major overarching threat. He is the fourth seven-star Vandel to attempt to kill Beet, and his turn to fight comes after the defeat of Histario. His development is marked by this patient accumulation of power and his singular focus on the protagonist. As for his abilities, beyond the use of his phantom, Bertoz is a master of an advanced technique known as Star Swallow, which has the power to seal the energy of the first star. In combat, he can concentrate the power of black flames into his fists to unleash devastating blows called Phantom Stroke and Phantom Explosion, demonstrating his overwhelming offensive capabilities.
