Description
Momiji Fujimiya is the central protagonist of the anime Blue Seed. She is a young girl living in the city of Izumo with her mother and grandmother, a place deeply tied to Japanese mythology. Born into a shrine family, she has always been subject to regular purification rituals and has been vaguely aware of a greater destiny expected of her by her grandmother, yet she considers herself a perfectly ordinary middle school student. Her world is turned upside down when she is attacked and called Kushinada, a name referring to an ancient princess whose bloodline carries the power to seal away mythological monsters known as Aragami. This hereditary power, known as the Kushinada pulse, flows through her veins and can send all Aragami into an eternal slumber if she dies, making her both the key to humanity's survival and a primary target for destruction. After a confrontation with the powerful Aragami known as Yamata no Orochi, Momiji saves a man named Mamoru Kusanagi by intercepting a fatal blow meant for him. In doing so, she becomes fused with a mitama, a soul fragment of an Aragami, which becomes embedded in her chest. Instead of killing her, this grants her the ability to sense the presence of other Aragami, a capability that proves invaluable to the secret government organization known as the Terrestrial Administration Center, or TAC. She is ultimately taken under the protection of the TAC and moves to Tokyo, where she decides to join them in their fight. Momiji has a naturally optimistic and bright outlook on herself and humanity in general. She tends to look on the positive side of situations and possesses a strong sense of initiative, though she becomes very shy when it comes to matters of romance. Her personality is a critical part of her development as the Kushinada, as her strength of will is necessary to keep the mitama within her from taking control. Her central motivation evolves from simple survival to a conscious decision to accept her destiny and fight the Aragami to protect the world. Her arrival in Tokyo sets in motion a journey that forces her to confront unspeakable horrors, discover a twin sister named Kaede Kunikida whom she never knew existed, and grapple with her own fate as a sacrifice. The most significant relationship in the story is her complicated bond with Mamoru Kusanagi. He initially seeks to kill her to free himself from the Aragami, but soon reconsiders and dedicates himself to protecting her. Their relationship deepens over the course of the series, marked by mutual teasing and an eventual romantic confession. Momiji also develops a connection with Daitetsu Kunikida, the chief director of the TAC, who had raised her twin sister Kaede and is now determined to treat Momiji with care rather than exploit her abilities as he did with Kaede. Over the course of the series, Momiji grows from a frightened and confused student into someone who can stand up to her destiny with courage. Her notable ability is her Kushinada heritage, which gives her the latent power to end the Aragami threat through her death. The mitama in her chest provides her with an active ability to detect and sense the presence of Aragami around her. She also carries the force known as the Kushinada pulse within her blood, a mysterious power dating back to the Age of Legends that is passed down through her lineage. Her name means maple, evoking the red color of maple leaves.
