TV-Series
Description
Daitetsu Kunikida serves as the Chief Director of the Terrestrial Administration Center, a covert Japanese government agency dedicated to combating the monstrous Aragami. Outwardly, he is a stern and determined leader, fiercely committed to protecting Japan from these supernatural threats. Privately, however, he is a deeply principled and compassionate man who struggles with the moral weight of the methods sometimes required. He abhors the idea of sacrificing the Kushinada, the one whose blood can neutralize the Aragami, and believes that a solution should not come at the cost of an innocent life.
His personal history is intertwined with the twin Kushinadas, Kaede and Momiji. When the twins were born, Kunikida took in Kaede and raised her as his own daughter. During that time, he relied on her aura-sensing ability to track and destroy Aragami, a decision he later regretted after Kaede disappeared in a suicide mission. When Momiji later becomes involved, he resolves not to repeat his past mistakes. Rather than treat her as a tool, he extends his protection and ultimately integrates her into the TAC as a valued member, becoming a father-like guardian to her.
Kunikida’s personality is defined by integrity, honor, and a strong sense of duty. He is methodical, logical, and holds both himself and others to high standards, yet beneath the disciplined exterior lies a sentimental heart. He develops a close personal bond with Momiji and also forms a special relationship with another TAC member, the agent Ryoko Takeuchi. Though his primary role is to direct the organization’s operations, he is no stranger to fieldwork and can hold his own in combat. He is frequently seen driving his distinctive Citroën XM, which becomes a small hallmark of his presence.
Throughout the series, Kunikida’s character development is marked by a shift from a pragmatist willing to exploit a Kushinada’s powers to a guardian who prioritizes her well-being. He learns from the guilt of Kaede’s loss and channels that lesson into a more humane, protective approach toward Momiji, embodying the conviction that Japan can be saved without the sacrifice of its young protectors.
