Description
Eiichirō Kushima is a central figure in the events of the anime Real Drive, primarily known as the director of the Electronics Industry Physical and Chemical Research Institute and the creator of the Meta-Real Network, also called the Metal. His background is deeply tied to the series' core incident; in the year 2012, he was a researcher conducting experiments on a new system for social networking. These experiments, which drew many principles from diving, were performed alongside his friend and professional diver, Masamichi Haru. During one of these tests, a catastrophic phenomenon known as the "burning sea" occurred, sending Haru into a coma for fifty years. Despite this traumatic event, Kushima continued his life's work, and by the time Haru awakens in 2061, the Meta-Real network has become the foundation of society.
Kushima possesses a complex and somewhat paradoxical personality. He is depicted as a highly controlled and perfectionist individual who keeps his emotions tightly hidden beneath a calm and professional exterior. This trait is highlighted by a significant revelation from his past: he was once a highly skilled violinist, proficient in a complex technique called "just intonation". A younger musician, Ichinose, deeply admired him. Yet, despite his technical skill, Kushima abandoned music, believing he lacked the genuine passion and love for the art that he saw in others like Ichinose. This decision to quit something he excelled at demonstrates a profound, almost ruthless honesty with himself about his own nature, suggesting his true passion was always for scientific understanding rather than artistic expression. He is not an unsympathetic figure, but his drive for knowledge and control defines his actions.
His motivations are primarily intellectual and tied to the health of the planet. Kushima is deeply concerned with the Earth's bio-rhythms and internal balance. The original goal of his research with Haru was to study these phenomena, and this quest remains at the heart of his work even decades later. He is determined to understand and protect the natural order, a goal that puts him in direct opposition to powerful individuals who plan to use new technology to artificially control the global climate. While these individuals are not evil, their plan to override natural systems conflicts fundamentally with Kushima's scientific principles and his respect for the Earth's inherent processes. This conflict becomes the central struggle of the series' final act.
Kushima's role in the story is multifaceted. He serves as the employer, mentor, and old friend to the protagonist, Masamichi Haru, as well as the ultimate authority figure for Haru's investigative team, which includes the young girl Minamo Aoi and her brother Souta. He is unfailingly supportive of Haru, providing him with the purpose and means to become a Cyber Diver in the Metal network, even as an elderly man in a wheelchair. His relationship with Haru is the most significant of his life, built on a shared history and mutual respect that spans over fifty years. His connections to others, such as Minamo, are more formal, though he becomes a central figure she interacts with directly on behalf of the institute. A notable aspect of his role is his physical state; he is the same age as Haru, but while Haru is an aged invalid, Kushima has the appearance of a vigorous man in his late twenties. This is because he replaced his original body with a highly advanced prosthetic one, and he even keeps a spare body, which is noted to resemble a young Masamichi Haru.
Throughout the series, Kushima does not undergo significant personal development in the traditional sense, as his character is largely static and enigmatic. However, the story reveals more about his hidden depths, particularly his past as a musician and his profound connection to Haru. The key event in his personal arc is his tragic end. In a direct confrontation with those attempting to control the weather, Kushima is assaulted and his cyberbrain is stolen, leading to his physical death. In a final, significant turn, a part of his personality and consciousness survives within the Metal network itself. From this digital afterlife, he is able to provide the crucial knowledge that allows Haru to avert a global catastrophe and restore the Earth's natural rhythm. In this way, his consciousness endures as a guide, ensuring his life's work is concluded not by controlling nature, but by preserving it.
Kushima has several notable abilities. Beyond his obvious genius as a researcher and architect of the Meta-Real network, his proficiency as a classical violinist is a major part of his backstory. He is also a pioneer in cybernetic technology, having successfully transferred his own consciousness into a prosthetic body, a feat that grants him functional immortality and allows him to continue his work for decades. His most critical ability, however, is his unique understanding of the relationship between the Meta-Real network, the ocean, and the fundamental forces of the Earth, a body of knowledge that proves essential to saving the world.
