Description
Masamichi Haru is the protagonist of the anime Real Drive, a cyber diver who investigates the boundary between the physical world and the vast information network known as the Metal. Born on April 1, 1980, he was a skilled diver of the Metal and a longtime friend of Eiichiro Kushima. While testing an early version of Meta-Real technology at the age of thirty, Haru suffered a catastrophic diving accident that left him in a coma for fifty years. When he finally awakens, he is an elderly, paraplegic man, but his mind remains sharp and his diving abilities intact.

Haru is driven by a deep, personal motivation to search for what he calls the answer in the sea, a quest that began after the accident. This goal reflects his contemplative and determined nature, as he seeks to understand the mysteries hidden within the Metal and his own past. Despite his physical limitations, he approaches his work with a calm, experienced demeanor and a sense of purpose.

In the story, Haru serves as the central figure, investigating aberrations that arise from the friction between reality and the Metal. He hires Minamo Aoi, a young intern, to guide him in the real world, and she becomes a key partner during his dives. His relationship with her evolves from a professional arrangement into a close, trusting bond, as she helps him navigate both the physical world and the depths of the Metal. Haru also maintains a deep, long-standing connection with Eiichiro Kushima, who was present during the original accident and later supports his investigations.

Throughout the series, Haru undergoes significant development. He begins as a man confined to a wheelchair, reliant on others for physical mobility, but his inner resolve never wavers. As he explores the Metal and confronts the truths hidden there, he gradually works toward personal recovery. Notably, towards the end of the series, he eventually regains the ability to walk, marking a major milestone in his journey.

Haru is distinguished by his abilities as a cyber diver, allowing him to plunge into the Metal and navigate its complex, often dangerous depths. His extensive experience from before the coma makes him exceptionally skilled, and his calm, analytical approach helps him decipher the anomalies he encounters. He also possesses a quiet resilience, enduring decades in a coma and adapting to a world that has changed drastically in his absence, all while pursuing his singular goal.
